What would be the effects if in the next few years, say 2019 / 2020, Turkey invokes Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty which signals its intent to leave NATO?
Does the rest of NATO pull out all the stops to keep them or let Turkey go? How important is Turkey in the modern / future era to NATO? This being when it's current leader has shown such disregard for NATO and is working with Russia?

I suspect they would seek to persuade Turkey to stay, if only for prestige purposes as losing a significant member would be a hit and opponents of the west, most noticeably Stalin Putin would enjoy making capital out of it. However they may not push too hard if Turkey is seen as too much in the hands of extremists.

If out of nato, does Turkey at once join a new power bloc? There is the Shanghai Treaty Org.

Turkey is a strategically-invaluable nation for NATO and something like a barrier for Russia. If Turkey leaves, they won't have a willing ally against Russia, causing tensions to spike. Worse: if Russia and Turkey start dating, there is a serious threat of an increasingly-aggresive NATO response. NATO needs to handle this with care.

It's a complicated situation. This was just a hypothetical of mine but possible in the near future with regional tensions all over the place.

Unfortunately, this will just aggravate things on the long run. The whole region is a mess.

A neutral and independent Kurdistan might actually solve a lot of the problems once the neighbouring states accept that independence. Which could be a long time unfortunately.

Turkey and Russia are only allies in Syria (well, informal, that is). Other than that, they're natural rivals elsewhere. However, I would like to know how a Turkish exit from NATO might have repercussions on the Caucasus region, particularly where Armenia and Azerbaijan are concerned. Turkey currently has a closed border with Armenia though.
