C-5 Galaxy Minuteman ICBM Drop Test
Well that is shall we say an interesting idea. Viewing it gave a link to this, which is a longer video on the subject, air launched Minuteman test. While technically practical I suspect it wasn't really worthwhile give you would need huge a/c to carry out such a launch and they and their bases would be prime targets for such an attack as well as very expansive. Also unless your got some terminal guidance I would assume accuracy would be affected as where you launch from and the weather conditions for the drop before the engine ignites will vary. Not to mention if there was some failure of the system your dropping a large nuclear missile - albeit hopefully not fully armed - quite possibly somewhere over your own country! However definitely thinking outside the box.
Suspect it may have been an idea put forward by the USAF to maintain a greater presence in the nuclear delivery role?

It appears to be a last resort of the Minuteman Silos in the Midwest were taken out. In the event of a nuclear war and the sirens go off, the C-5s could go airborne quickly just like the B-52s.

Might be the case. If things really went to hell then its another option, although at that date [and possibly even more nowadays] I would say that silos would be more likely to survive longer to launch a counter strike than such a complex system. However having watched the 15 minute film it was a hell of an achievement to test such an idea, especially since they seem to have done it all within a couple of months.

Good thing the world never saw to find out how effective these weapons are.

How Russia Could Have Won the Cold War by Using Nukes
Very wankish for the Soviet forces, ignoring a lot of the problems they had where actual performance didn't meet propaganda. Also it ignores the greater accuracy of US missiles, which goes a considerable way to counter the greater size/numbers of some Soviet designs. Furthermore the Soviets also had to consider the response of Britain and France as well as that China, after ~1956 was not friendly.
Most of all it assumes that 'winning' means being able to do more damage. That the Soviet empire would be shattered by an allied counter strike even ignoring lasting aspects such as fall-out and other effects seems to be forgotten. Especially since a military dictatorship like the SU with its forces and communications largely destroyed is a lot more vulnerable to collapse than a democratic state.

Agreed. The Soviets have five other countries (if you include Israel) that would fire nukes against them. Soviet nuclear missiles such as the SS-18 and the SS-19 are known to be inaccurate hence the reason why major cities are often over targeted. This video assumes a one-sided conflict between the USA and the USSR. Keep in mind the USA at this period used the B-52 while the USSR has the Tu-95.
