Map: America from The Handmaid's Tale (TV series)

In a episode of Handmaid's Tale you can see the Former United states of America which is now divided between the Republic of Gilead (blue) and their colonies (yellow) and the US Government-in-exile in Anchorage (red), with dark red being under control of rebels, foreign powers or following orders from the the US US Government-in-exile.

   OK many thanks for that. The northern liberated regions don't have much of the traditional rust-belt industrial heartland so mainly rural areas I think.

   The Pacific SW got hit hard and some nasty fallout there and also just west of the Mississippi. Sounds very messy in the US and it could all end very badly for everybody.

Well after your post in the Maps from the internet thread i went digging and found the second map which seems to be official.

So the big question here is how did a red movement end up controlling mostly blue areas whereas the red areas are mostly rebel held or wrecked ?

You mean the good guys (US Government-in-exile in Anchorage) using the color red, while the bad guys who are the Republic of Gilead use blue, well both maps are published by Gilead so i assume that they believe they are the good guys and the good guys always get to use the color blue on maps.

Well no what I'm saying here is that Gilead or the Sons of Jacob can be called a red or conservative movement. Based on this map we see that they firmly control mostly blue or liberal areas-ie the Northeastern and Upper Midwest of the US. Whereas the red or conservative areas ie the South and the Mountain West are not firmly controlled by Gilead and are mostly rebel held and wrecked. Only the West Coast seems to match with what we would expect to see- a blue or liberal area that seems to be fully in rebellion and targeted by the red or conservative movement which controls all those blue areas. Hope you get what I mean

It is a very strange map. I get that it is in effect based off the book, written in the 1980s and transported for the modern age, but it still seems very weird.
Those rebel areas are all around the outside to the north, west and south. That would give the impression that rebel forces are supplied from the sea but in the modern era that doesn't seem feasible. By whom? After the New US has used nukes on its own soil any hostile foreign regime supporting internal US rebels is getting several buckets of instasun. I'd also think that much of the interior West - the Rockies - would be hotbeds of resistance more so that Florida ever could be.
Something else: Anchorage wouldn't be suitable for a HQ for a government-in-exile. It is too far away. It should be in CONUS, somewhere in California, Texas or, hell, even Florida. Anywhere but so physically, and in reality mentally, too far away like Anchorage is.

  That's a good point and the only argument I could see for making it sensible [kind-of] is that during the chaos of the coup that brought the religious fanatics to power most of the nuclear weapons were destroyed/disabled and only fairly short ranged tactile ones fell into Gilead's hands.  Hence they can't threaten nuclear strikes on powers beyond N America and possibly Britain [along with other powers] are saying they would respond against Gilead if it launches nukes against Canada.  Of course that doesn't explain why west coast sub launched missiles aren't available for their opponents but possibly they don't want to nuke their own people.

  This might also explain why the HQ for the opposition as they fear that Gilead would nuke any centre in the continental 48 states.  [Although still seems doubtful.]

  Agree with michaeljco that it seems odd that the centre of Gilead is [other than the Pacific coast] the most liberal and socially mixed area.  You would think a religious fundamentalist government would draw its strength more from the old south and the mid-west, which I think tend to be the most conservative areas religiously.  Might depend on the exact circumstances of the coup and their aims but it does seem an unlikely set of circumstances.

It is believed that the United States Armed Forces (who are still loyal to the US Government-in-exile in Anchorage, Alaska and are stationed in Canada to prevent Gilead from expanding its territory as well as to liberate the parts of the United States that are under Gilead rule) manged to move America's nuclear arsenal (which hasn't fallen into Gilead hands) into Canada.

Not trying to hijack the thread I posted it just to demonstrate what I meant about how the Handmaids Tale map seems to deviate from what we would usually expect in a Second America Civil War storyline...
