Peshtigo: America's Deadliest Fire episode - 141 Interesting that as he says the fire occurred on the same day as the one in Chicago but as a result has been largely overlooked despite more people being killed in the Pestigo blaze.

Fascinating story, thanks and never heard of him before. It shows again that even in the most brutal regimes human spirit can sometimes shine through.
I must admit I laughed at the point where it mentioned his German secretary - who may have been with the Gestapo was also stamping vises with him.

Well then there is also the German John Rabe, a German businessman and Nazi Party member best known for his efforts to stop Japanese war crimes during its occupation of Nanjing (Nanking) and his work to protect and help Chinese civilians during the massacre that ensued. |

That's him. Brave man who deserved a much better fate, as did so many millions in that war. Could remember his surname started with a W but too long since I read anything about him. |
