This reminds me of Guns of the South.
Well as I understand it, its just one man moved by forces beyond his control and being stranded once he gets in the past. GotS was more a time travel type of story as the future Boers had deliberately opened up a path to change the civil war and IIRC were still in contact with their future world - although how it avoids the grandfather paradox I don't know. However like most ISOT cases its a factor of whoever or whatever is moved generally having a huge impact on the time/location they come to. Plus while I'm uncertain about the guy managing to get powered a/c and the steam engines might be an issue depending on how well he could manage to achieve the necessary level of tolerance and material purity but its probably more realistic in terms of how the Mongols were stopped compared to some of the events in GotS.
Please note - I c**ked up here as getting confused with another TL. As such please ignore this comment.

Think more of a small team that is inserted into another world or time to acquire artifacts & trade for minerals. So businessman and a few heavies nothing that would be out of sorts with a modern business trip to the developing world. Heck it doesn't even need to be illegal there can be open trade.

Duh, as I edited my post to say just realised I was mixing up TLs, thinking I was in the engineer back to medieval Poland. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Were you thinking of the Stargazer books? I found them to be fun, who doesn't like a book that involves building up a society to take down the invading Mongols.

No oscssw's Cross-Time Engineer Adventures thread on this same page. Just got my wires crossed and confused the two.
