1 SYRANO (Système Robotisé d'Acquisition pour la Neutralisation d'Objectifs, "Robotic acquisition system for neutralization of targets") is the first operational battlefield robot of the French military.

SYRANO was designed by a consortium of CGEY, THALES, GIAT Industries and SAGEM to collect information in combat zones, especially in urban combat conditions. It is based on the Wiesel AWC of the German Army.
The SYRANO program started in December 1994 at the initiative of the General Directorate of Armament (DGA). An economic interest group of the same name, SYRANO, was then created between Giat Industries, Itmi Aptor of the Cap Gemini Sogeti group, SAGEM and Dassault Electronique. An operational battlefield observation robot demonstrator was created in 19971 and delivered to the French army in July 19992.

I am just imagining the public outcry at battlefield robots. Airborne drones set many people off in outrage but robot tanks (the media could call them tanks regardless) would really be something to get upset about.

A lot of countries use combat drones these days, the Netherlands has a unit called the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Cell (Robotica en Autonome Systemen cel) that is operated by the 13th Light Brigade and uses 6 Milrem THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles.

The XM1219 Armed Robotic Vehicle was an unmanned ground combat vehicle based on the MULE Platform. The ARV-A-L MULE Vehicle (XM1219) would feature integrated anti-tank and anti-personnel and reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) systems remotely operated by network linked soldiers. The Armed robotic vehicle was canceled in July 2011 over mobility concerns

Isn't this the same as UGV's? I'm even seen photos of UGV's in US military service.

Technically yes as: An unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is a vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground and without an onboard human presence. UGVs can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible to have a human operator present. Generally, the vehicle will have a set of sensors to observe the environment, and will either autonomously make decisions about its behavior or pass the information to a human operator at a different location who will control the vehicle through teleoperation.

Guardium, developed by G-NIUS, is an Israeli unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) used to combat and guard against invaders along Gaza's border. It was jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and Elbit Industries.[1] It can be used in either tele-operated or autonomous mode. Both modes do not require human interaction. The more unmanned ground vehicles patrolling the area the less human resources needed while guaranteeing deterrence.[2] The joint program was terminated in April 2016, but the vehicle has remained in service with the Israel Defense Forces.
