Epilogue: Brave New World - Part 2
"Merde, you made it my friend." Jules said, hugging his Filipino friend and his wife.
"Bonjour, Jules." Gabrielle said.
"Where are the others?" The Frenchman said.
"I'm right here." Mike replied. Behind him, three other men followed.
"There are my film crew. This is Salcedo, Ryan, Hans, and John Patrick. They will be accompanying us in this trip to film a documentary on the matter
"Nice to meet you all
"I'm happy you two are married now."
"Merci." Gillan replied.
"You have any kids?" The Frenchman asked.
"Not yet." The girl replied.
***********
The trio then drove towards the site where one of Jules' friends was killed. It was in the middle of the city. In the last 10 years, Los Angeles has been reconstructed along with most major cities in America. A notable construction here was integration of a monorail system around the city similar to the ones seen in Vancouver. There were also sentries, sniffer robots, and CCTV around that could detect infection while armed police were stationed everywhere. Figuratively, it would look like George Orwell's 1984. More emphasis was placed on drone warfare should an outbreak even emerge.
The old convenience store where the two Frenchmen stood there, opened and in operation. It gave Jules memories of the place.
"We got our guns here on an abandoned LAPD cruiser." The Frenchman replied.
Later, they drove towards another block of the city. The same road where Dylan was killed. Ten years ago, there was major battle fought here. The military and police tried to cover the retreat and evacuation of civilians. Jules felt a chill down his spine. He found it hard to believe that a decade had passed. It felt like only yesterday.
"This is spot where he was killed." He pointed. "Those Infected dragged him down and tore him apart. I never even got his passport and his unit patch."
Gillan, Gabrielle, Mike, and his colleagues stood silent in respect.
"I told you before I foolishly charged at the horde. I would have been killed if Jim didn't save me. I was lucky he was there or else I would not be here right now."
**************
They drove to the apartment complex where Gillan, Gabrielle, and Mike held in the rooftop when they were trying to gather information on Z-Day. Like most part of the city, it had been cleared and decontaminated. Although Mike couldn't be there with them, they nonetheless visited the same place.
"Dude, is this the place you guys took refuge?" John Patrick asked.
"Yeah, this is the place where the her, Mike, and I hid to escape the chaos on the streets below." Gillan said.
"My then-boyfriend died here." Gabrielle said. Even at the age of 32, she still looked young and beautiful but her face saw the scars millions around the world saw during those days. She felt the same chill like Jules. She was a just 22 year old woman back then, ready to explore the world.
"He could not be buried. We had to leave his body here." Gabrielle replied.
"Sorry to hear that." Salcedo added.
"Where do you think they took our fallen friends' body?" Gillan asked.
"There's this memorial up north where FEMA and the government dug a mass grave to bury both dead bodies of the Infected. I'm sure they took the bodies or the remains there. I mean we can visit it there."
"Better be it. I have not gone back here in roughly 10 years..." Gillan replied.
**************
The drive up north was a normal peaceful drive. They passed by the Pacific Highway right next to the coast. Traffic levels were normal. The city was once again lively with people going back to the beach and enjoying the West Coast sun. The view shifted from the buzzling city of Los Angeles to the hills of Malibu.
A few minutes later they arrived at the site, where a monument was built. The monument contained a globe next to a syringe to symbolize the vaccine that eradicated the Killer Pandemic. There was the flag of the United States, the flag of all five branches of the armed forces, the state flag of California, and the flag of the United Nations. There were no names written on the memorial for there were too much to write. But anyone who remembered that they had a relative that died on the outbreak and unable to retrieve the remains knew they may have been buried here.
There were tons of people there, paying their respects, lighting a candle, and leaving flowers to those who perished.
The three then lighted a candle and said a short prayer.
"I'm sure he's at peace now." Gabrielle said.
"You mean Charles?" Gillan asked.
"Yeah...I mean we are married but I always felt we never gave him the proper rights since that day we were on the rooftop on the first day of the outbreak." She added.
"I wish I did but I think personally that keeping him in our prayers and remembering his sacrifice for you to live is the best way to honor him." Gillan said.
"Yeah I guess you're right."
"Same goes for you Jules, I think your buddy Dylan is at peace up there." Gillan replied.
"For sure, mate." Jules replied. "I hope you're having fun up there my friend."
As they say, time heals. While those who perished are never forgotten along with their sacrifice, the world was in a much better place thanks to the cooperation of mankind to eradicate the virus once and for all.
