Well Bulgaria always can go-Pro British and try to claim they need to rearm in order to defend themselves, if it works, i do not know. The problem is that Britain has relatively little to spare as its rearming frantically. Plus it puts you high on Hitler's hit list - doubly so as your very close to the Romanian oilfields. Unless you can avoid the fall of France and collapse of the western democracies on the continent, which will leave you defenseless against the Germans and/or your neighbours with German prompting. Bulgaria is reliant on communications through the straits so isn't in a position to be easily aided even if the western powers are in a position to send help in enough force which they aren't for most of the war.
Well then we have to go the second route, make sure Bulgaria is ready for war with the Soviet Union.

As of 1972, but let us assume a survey of potential national resources is conducted as was done by the United States Geophysical Survey in 1922? Bulgaria is not completely helpless. There are two main (now electrified) railway routes running from the main seaports to Sofia present. That is "interesting". One always starts with the fundamentals of Geography, Human Potential and Material Resources. A national redoubt military strategy immediately presents itself.

Well, as the geography dictates, a retreat to the southwest of the country and a joint or combined defense with Yugoslavia and Greece might be militarily possible. German troops in Italy were TERRIBLE at mountain warfare on offense and night fighting in general against competent Allied infantry. And by competent; I mean Americans, Poles, French Colonials and Brazilians. The Bulgarians of WWI were some ROUGH customers, so I would rate their chances of forming the core infantry redoubt mountain defense nucleus of a Pan Balkan alliance as "good". See map. Two defense belts at the Balkan Mountains and the Rhodepen Range. The supply lines run south into Greece. The supplier of choice (1930s) is FRANCE.
