These fellows look really old... I've heard about "Dad's Army", but had assumed that they'd rather be WW1 veterans. But these guys really look too old to have been soldiers in WW1.
If you mean the roles most were middle age or elderly, although I think Frasier and Jones are the main ones who have been mentioned at the time. Pike was young and a number of others weren't too old, the only one I can remember off the top of my head was the spiv but can't remember their names. I think most were largely civilians, such as Mannering, and hence had no military experience. It was only those too old for the regular forces, such as Frasier and Jones who would have had such such experience and be in the Home Guard. If you recall for Jones the suggestion was that his experience went back as far as the Sudan campaign in 1898. As such there's a degree of selection that only pretty elderly characters would have experience in previous wars and be in the Home Guard. A lot of the younger veterans of WWI would actually be in the regular army and as such wouldn't be displayed in Dad's Army.
