If there was not a Cuban revolution, here is an interesting question. Who could realistically become a communist country is so close to the United States, were at least in the western hemisphere? I remember making a alternative history at the south in the Civil War and a Decolonialization world except Cuba was not the communist power. It would be somewhere such as Nicaragua or Jamaica.

Jamaica did have a powerful communist government during the Cold War
I think your misreading the article. It states that there was armed conflict between supporters of the former PM Michael Manley who had led a Socialist government and those of Trevor Munroe’s Communist Workers Party of Jamaica. I.e. the former PM's followers were clashing with the main Jamaican communist party.
Possibly the best bet for some sort of communist lead nation might be Bolivia or Peru. Both are poor states with minimal strategic or economic importance so a left wing government might less likely to attract US irk. Also with a huge population of often non-Spanish peasants denied any real rights and government by a small predominantly Spanish speaking elite controlling pretty much all the land as well as military and political power. Possibly as well as being quite a distance from the US if Cuba hasn't gone communist them Washington will overlook the situation until its too late without major intervention to stop a successful revolt. Which if say Vietnam is already absorbing the bulk of US attention could be decided to not be worthwhile.
Perhaps I read the article wrong, but I thought Jamaca had a strong communist party. Central America is possible, but for one of its nations to continue being communist is a different story. When the famous Che Guevara tried to take over Bolivia, the people were uninterested in his revolutionary attempt. As for the article, I meant for it to show it had strong communist party
Peru has many Native American inhabitants, as many as 40%. This would be interesting. Juan Velasco Alvarado could be that communist regime alternative. The problem is that many South American nations surround her. Cuba is an island which allows harder access to hostile elements trying to take over a country
