A, toughed that it was 1983: Doomsday because it is a very famous one and also very expanded in universe building. While I'm not much of a post apocalyptic geek, I'll give 1983: Doomsday credit for being a shining example of a web-based AH work having potential for expanding its mythos; I wish a lot of AH works get that treatment as well, it's almost like AH is the final frontier of fiction IMO.

Well there are not many Cold War alternate universe building out there, the other big one is Red Dawn 20+.

Personally I blame the whole "WWIII=Nuclear Holocaust that magically destroys the world" mentality that a lot of people; yes there are works of fiction that deal with a total nuclear war like Threads and the after mentioned 1983: Doomsday thing but I can't help but sense that we just like to write off the aftermath of a war of that type and scale as the "end of the world" and not worth talking about much, it's almost as if we can't stomach the idea that life would continue even in the face of a nuclear apocalypse (granted it's not pleasant but it's creative laziness for as far as I'm concerned).

Well the alternative would be that nobody survives a World War III, but what is the fun about that.

My thoughts exactly, I'll take the idea of "some nukes happen but somehow the world doesn't end" thing thank you very much.

That why i like Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy a lot, its World War III but with no nukes flying.

I feel the same way towards Giobastia's Able Archer 83 TL, except that one has nukes flying but thankfully not enough to destroy the world.

Well the problem is that when you use nukes it has the habit of escalating if the other side feels threaten.

Well the problem is that when you use nukes it has the habit of escalating if the other side feels threaten. Yeah, there's no telling if the nuclear side of things stays limited or almost entirely all-out; and I say almost because well if the other side uses up most the nukes they might save the rest for when their possibly continued conventional fighting still doesn't knock the other side out. But then again it's possible that both sides might be too shaken up by the nukes to fight and that's where the problem is, is that we don't know how much damage they might take. And perhaps that's why a lot of WWIII works are quite reluctant to take the nuclear parts is because they are a true wild card and I somehow don't blame them.
