Day of infamy-Empire of China

Something i once posted on AH.com, it uses speeches i have modified somewhat depicting the Empire of China being the aggressor in this universe.

Infamy Speech

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of China.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of China was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward maintaining of peace in Asia . Indeed, one hour after Chinese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Chinese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from China makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Chinese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Chinese Government also launched an attack against Korea.

Last night Chinese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Chinese forces attacked Okinawa.

Last night Chinese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese attacked French Indochina.

And this morning the Chinese attacked Japan.

China has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout Asia. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by China on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Chinese Empire.

Chinese declaration of war on the United States and the Empire of Japan

By the grace of the Son of Heaven, Lord of Ten Thousand Years, Emperor of China [Xuantong Emperor], Our loyal and brave subjects:

We hereby declare War on the United States of America and the Empire of Japan. The men and officers of Our Army and Navy shall do their utmost in prosecuting the war. Our public servants of various departments shall perform faithfully and diligently their respective duties; the entire nation with a united will shall mobilize their total strength so that nothing will miscarry in the attainment of Our war aims.

To insure the stability of Asia and to contribute to world peace which is the far-sighted policy formulated by his Imperial Majesty [Xuantong Emperor]. To cultivate friendship among nations and to enjoy prosperity in common with all nations, has always been the guiding principle of Our Empire's foreign policy. It has been truly unavoidable and far from Our wishes that Our Empire has been brought to cross swords with America and Japan. More than four years have passed since Korea, failing to comprehend the true intentions of Our Empire, and recklessly courting trouble, disturbed the peace of East Asia and compelled Our Empire to take up arms. Although there has been reestablished the National Government of Korea with which China had effected neighborly intercourse and cooperation, the regime which has survived in Busan relying upon American and Japanese protection, still continues its fratricidal opposition. Eager for the realization of their inordinate ambition to dominate Korea, both America and Japan giving support to the Busan regime, have aggravated the disturbances in East Asia. Moreover these two Powers, inducing other countries to follow suit, increased military preparations on all sides of Our Empire to challenge Us. They have obstructed by every means Our peaceful commerce and finally resorted to a direct severance of economic relations, menacing gravely the existence of Our Empire. Patiently have We waited and long have We endured, in the hope that Our government might retrieve the situation in peace. But Our adversaries, showing not the least spirit of conciliation, have unduly delayed a settlement; and in the meantime they have intensified the economic and political pressure to compel thereby Our Empire to submission. This trend of affairs, would, if left unchecked, not only nullify Our Empire's efforts of many years for the sake of the stabilization of East Asia, but also endanger the very existence of Our nation. The situation being such as it is, Our Empire, for its existence and self-defense has no other recourse but to appeal to arms and to crush every obstacle in its path.

The hallowed spirits of Our Imperial Ancestors guarding Us from above, We rely upon the loyalty and courage of Our subjects in Our confident expectation that the task bequeathed by Our forefathers will be carried forward and that the sources of evil will be speedily eradicated and an enduring peace immutably established in East Asia, preserving thereby the glory of Our Empire.

Soviet–Chinese Neutrality Pact

DECLARATION

In conformity with the spirit of the Pact on neutrality concluded on April 13, 1941, between the U.S.S.R. and China , the Government of the U.S.S.R. and the Government of China, in the interest of insuring peaceful and friendly relations between the two countries, solemnly declare that the U.S.S.R. pledges to respect the territorial integrity and inviolability of those areas of Korea , the Chinese empire controls , and China pledges to respect the territorial integrity and inviolability of the Mongolian People's Republic.

GERMANY, ITALY, AND CHINA SIGN NEW PACT BARRING A SEPARATE PEACE WITH THE UNITED STATES OR GREAT BRITAIN ​

December 11, 1941 ​

ARTICLE I

Italy, Germany and China will henceforth conduct in common and jointly a war which has been imposed on them by the United States of America and England, by all means at their disposal and until the end of hostilities.

ARTICLE II

Italy, Germany and China undertake each for himself that none of the parties to the present accord will conclude either armistice or peace, be it with the United States or with England without complete and reciprocal agreement [of the three signatories to this pact].

ARTICLE III

Italy, Germany and China, even after the victorious conclusion of this war, will collaborate closely in the spirit of the Tripartite Pact, concluded Sept. 21, 1940, in order to realize and establish an equitable new order in the world.

ARTICLE IV

The present accord is effective immediately on its signature and remains in force for the duration of the Tripartite Pact, signed Sept. 21, 1940. The high contracting parties of this accord will at an opportune moment agree among themselves the means of implementing Article III above of this accord.

Interesting. Presumably the European situation is basically identical to OTL with fascist Germany and Italy already at war with at least Britain and possibly the USSR?

Was this the entire plot or do you have any more on how things developed from this point.

Europe is more ore less the same, except in Asia then, yes i have some more i created.

Joint Resolution Declaring That a State of War Exists Between The Imperial Government of China and the Government And the People of the United States and Making Provisions To Prosecute the Same, 8 December 1941

Whereas the Imperial Government of China has committed unprovoked acts of war against the Government and the people of the United States of America:

Therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the state of war between the United States and the Imperial Government of China which has thus been thrust upon the United States is hereby formally declared; and the President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against the imperial Government of China; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all of the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States.

Netherlands declaration of war against the Empire of China

On December 9th, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands issued the following proclamation:

The Kingdom of the Netherlands considers itself in a state of war with China.

While negotiations which were in progress between the governments of the United States and China were not yet completed, and while President Roosevelt exhibited the greatest patience and did his utmost to preserve peace in the Pacific, and while an appeal which President Roosevelt had sent to the Emperor of China still remained unanswered, Chinese forces attacked American, Japanese and British territory without a declaration of war.

Thus war has been forced on the United States, the Japanese Empire and the British Empire. You know how Germany, in the same manner that China now emulates in Asia, attacked many countries in Europe, one after another. China, motivated by the same spirit of aggression and the same disregard of law, follows in the footsteps of her German Axis partner.

Neither the safety of the territories of our Kingdom in the Far East, nor the Ties which bind us to our Japanese and British Allies, nor the special relations which exist between the Netherlands and the United States allow the Government of the Kingdom to look on passively.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands considers itself in a state of war with China because the aggression-which seeks to put out of action, one by one, the countries which desire peace-can only be halted through a strong coalition.

Now that the American, Japanese and British peoples, with whom we are closely bound in friendship, are attacked, the Kingdom of the Netherlands places all its armed forces and resources at the disposal of the allied war effort.

The development of our Kingdom for centuries has been guided by a unified destiny. In the hurricane which threatens this development, it rises with resolute unity to maintain its place in the world. The Netherlands did not hesitate to defend herself immediately, with courage, when she was viciously attacked in Europe. The Netherlands East Indies will not waver now that she is menaced by a similar attack.

The Indies stood with the Netherlands in her hour of trial. The Netherlands and our West Indies will stand with the East Indies now that the Indies are resisting aggression. I rely on the Navy, the Army and the Air Force, the authorities and the civilian services.

I and all my subjects rely on the courage, resolution and determination of all those in the Indies. Trusting in God, whom all my subjects desire to serve in freedom and who know that our cause is righteous and our conscience clear, we accept the challenge together with our powerful allies.

We will triumph and our Kingdom, beset but at the same time purified, steeled and standing with inviolable pride will survive stronger than ever to live under our free banner in a world free from aggression.

In the Indies, Governor General Van Starkenborgh Stachouwer made the following declaration by radio to the population of the Netherlands East Indies:

People of the Netherlands East Indies: In its unexpected attack on American, Japanese and British territories while diplomatic negotiations were still in progress, the Chinese empire has consciously adopted a course of aggression. These attacks, which have thrown the United States of America, the Japanese empire and the British empire into active war on the side of already-fighting Korea, have as their object the establishment of Chinese supremacy in the whole Asia. These aggressions also menace the Netherlands East Indies in no small measure. The Netherlands government accepts the challenge and takes up arms against the Chinese empire.

The sheer size of China, the vast population,distance, and an obviously large navy foretell a much longer harder war to me.

Yes it is going to be hard for the United States, United Kingdom and the Empire of Japan among others to defeat China but its not impossible for them.

  A lot would depend on the relative technology and industrial resources of the assorted powers as presumably China is a lot stronger than OTL and possibly more advanced technologically.  Japan might still be powerful as well but will lack Korea, Manchuria and presumably Taiwan.  Also on the social stability of China.  An autocratic empire of traditional Chinese mode could have feet of clay when things seriously go against them.

  I would think the Dutch would have been attacked already as unless its found alternative sources China will still be seeking oil supplies and the DEI are probably the closest.  This could be the Chinese Achilles heel.

  Suspect that a powerful China allied with Nazi German would have Stalin very, very nervous as his forces are gravely stretched at this point and even relatively minor pressure could threaten much of Siberia and supplies lines across the Pacific.  Plus if it has secure control of Sinkiang then it could threaten the Soviets in central Asia as well.  Also attacking Burma from the north.

Korea is hostile to China, from AH.com i once made this post regarding Korea and China.

Sino-Korean War background

In April 1937 construction of the China-Korea Friendship Bridge crossing the Yalu River began.

In May, only a month in the construction of the bridge, a bomb exploded, on the Chinese side, killing several workers, in responds, the Chinese imperial government who had invested a lot of money in the construction and under the pretext of protecting the workers on both the Chinese and Korean side, deployed the Chinese imperial army in Sinuiju, the Korean location where the bridge was build.

Te presences of Chinese imperial forces, on the territory of republic of Korea, was not greeted well by the Korean government who demanded that all Chinese imperial forces would leave Sinuiju , as the republic of Korea had not a large army, it knew that it could not drive the Chinese imperial army back, nor did it want to start a war whit the empire of China, was forced to watch and to hear the Chinese imperial government refusal to do so.

However the people of Korea unlike its government, did respond, whit demonstrations, riot and strikes, all in the hope to delay the construction of the bridge and to hamper the Chinese imperial army present in Sinuiju.

But the attempts to get the Chinese imperial army in Sinuiju, backfired as the Chinese imperial government responded, by sending on July 7th , 1937 a large army over the border whit the republic of Korea, starting the Sino-Korean War.

That why Stalin signed the Soviet–Chinese Neutrality Pact, while he is still nervous with a pro-Germany China around he hoops that China will not engage the Soviet Union while the soviet Union is fighting Germany.

KOREA DECLARATION OF WAR AGAINST CHINA, ALSO AGAINST GERMANY AND ITALY

(China waged an undeclared war on Korea from July 7, 1937, and Korea resisted that undeclared war without technically announcing the existence of a state of war until December 9, 1941, when the text of the declaration was issued by Kim Gu, President of the Korean Republic.)

China national policy has always aimed at the domination of Asia and mastery of the Pacific. For more than four years Korea has resolutely resisted China aggression, regardless of suffering and sacrifice, in order not only to maintain her national independence and freedom but also to uphold international law and justice and to promote world peace and human happiness.

Korea is a peace-loving nation. In taking up arms in self-defense, Korea entertained the hope that China might yet realize the futility of her plans of conquest. Throughout the struggle all the other powers have shown the utmost forbearance likewise in the hope that China might one day repent and mend her ways in the interest of peace in the entire Pacific region.

Unfortunately China aggressive capacities prove to be incorrigible. After her long and fruitless attempt to conquer Korea, China, far from showing any signs of penitence, has treacherously launched an attack on Korea friends, the United States, Japan and Great Britain, thus extending the theater of her aggressive activities and making herself the arch-enemy of justice and world peace.

This latest act of aggression on the part of China lays bare her insatiable ambitions and has created a situation that no nation which believes in international good faith and human decency can tolerate.

The Korean Government hereby formally declares war on China. The Korean Government further declares that all treaties, conventions, agreements and contracts regarding relations between Korea and China are and remain null and void.

Since the conclusion of the Tripartite Pact of September 1940, Germany, Italy, and China have unmistakably banded themselves into a block of aggressor states working closely together to carry out their common program of world conquest and domination. To demonstrate their solidarity Germany and Italy successively accorded recognition to China puppet regime in North Korea. As a consequence, Korea severed her diplomatic relations with Germany and Italy last July. Now the Axis powers have extended the theater of their aggressive activities and thrown the whole Pacific region into turmoil, making themselves the enemies of international justice and world civilization.

This state of affairs can no longer be tolerated by the Korean Government and people. The Korean Government hereby declares that as from midnight, December 9, 1941, a state of war exists between Korea and Germany and between China and Italy. The Korean Government further declares that all treaties, conventions, agreements, and contracts regarding relations between Korea and Germany and between China and Italy are and remain null and void.

One typo in that last section heading as I doubt the Koreans declared war on Japan. Know what you mean however.

I can't see Korea resisting a powerful China for that long without considerable direct support from another power, most likely Japan. If nothing else I would expect China has a much more powerful navy than Korea so it could isolate it and also support invasions by sea behind the front line, making the peninsula undefendable. You might see guerilla resistance but given the situation and also Chinese history this would be likely to be very savagely suppressed and Korea doesn't have the resources to resist a nation as large as China if the latter has even equal technology no matter how many geniuses are staffing the Korean government and military.

  Ah thanks for clarifying.  It makes sense that Korea would be overrun as I said but some guerilla resistance is likely, especially possibly with aid from supporters in Japan, which is so close.  Going to be at a very heavy cost I fear.

We can also include the Soviet Union to the list with them supporting the Korean communist in Chinese occupied Korea up till the signing of the Soviet–Chinese Neutrality Pact when they halted the aid to the Korean communist.
