In response to the Israeli air strike against Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor on June 7, 1981, France launched a retaliatory air strike against Israel targeting the air base from which the attack on Iraq was launched.

Why would France attack a country like Israel. Bad timing and/or targeting resulted in dozens of French workers being killed instead of one? |

Still France is not foolish enough to go against the most armed and best trained force in the Middle East who also is very close to a country who will not tolerate a NATO ally targeting them. |

Still France is not foolish enough to go against the most armed and best trained force in the Middle East who also is very close to a country who will not tolerate a NATO ally targeting them. France would probably lose it's NATO membership or what's left of it for attacking Israel. As well as probably most of its attacking a/c which would be politically rather awkward for the government. I suspect France wouldn't try anything militarily but make some serious diplomatic and possibly economic responses. Also probably so many French deaths would be embarissing for the Israelis. They would offer apologies and compensation, which will it won't greatly help the families of the dead would ease tension somewhat. |

If they got used it could get very hairy if the Israelis struck back against them. Also do not forget the 6 Sa'ar 2-class missile boas, 6 Sa'ar 3-class missile boats and 10 Sa'ar 4-class missile boats who make up the surface fleet, put then together the aircraft fleet made up of F-4 Phantom IIs, A-4 Skyhawk, F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon and you have a very deadly opponent for the French. |

The other factor is what bases are the French using? Their lost their African colonies by this stage except possibly French Somalia but even from there it would be a long way and might need air-to-air refueling, while any a/c damaged could well be lost on the way back. If from Corsica its definitely going to be a long haul. France is still a great power and can certainly project power in the Mediterranean. It has a full blue water navy complete with aircraft carriers and a major naval base at Toulon. It also has a sizable air force, including Mirage IV bombers and KC-135 refueling aircraft, which could be based out of Istres. |
