  Interesting.  I knew the colonists started to introduce black slaves because so many of the native Indians were dying off and the Spanish crown tried to restrict their enslavement.  Plus that there was forced labour in places like the Bolivian silver mine.  However not that such activities went on so long and so far north. 

  Given human nature its not too surprising that some went the other way and that escaped slaves themselves became slave owners in some cases. Depressing perhaps but not surprising.
