Depending on how he behaves during Nixon's fight and afterwards it might affect 1976. If he hasn't pardoned Nixon nor too openly supported his fight to stay in power - although that could be difficult as VP - he might not be tainted in the same way as OTL and possibly could come back to defeat Carter. Alternatively if he's too tainted by close association in a long and bitter court fight he might decide its not worthwhile standing, at least in 76. Which presuming a reaction against Washington as OTL could mean Carter v Reagan then - peanut farmer v actor - which would be interesting. [Although both had experiences as governors of their states so they do have some experience.] Could go either way.

So Ford can be the dude who lucked out at becoming President, which means suddenly millions of Americans have a guy they didn't even voted for as President. If I were him, I would stay away from Nixon, although I don't see Ford's chances against Carter. Ford has to have a really good presidency for him to have a winning chance in the elections. |

Still think Ford will be a one time president, this Nixon impeachment thing is not going to help him win his own term in office. |

That's what happened OTL. He was selected as VP when Nixon's original VP Spiro Agnew who had to resign about a year after the election due to charges of corruption earlier in his career. As such Ford, who was previously House minority leader [just checked on Wiki] was nominated as his successor. Which mean he was never elected but it makes it a bit difficult for him to distance himself from Nixon as the man who selected him for the role. Although since this was after the Watergate affair actually occurred possibly he could claim ignorance when news comes out then and distance himself.
I think Ford could win in 76 despite this. He came fairly close in the last stages of the campaign against Carter. A slightly better run campaign might have done it. If he hadn't pardoned Nixon, while this might have been politically difficult because of support for Nixon in the Republican party, might have been enough on its own. It could still be a Carter victory or, if Washington was less implicated by corruption, sat to Ford and others coming out strongly against Nixon you might not have the same swing against the established politics and a different Democratic candidate. After all he was quite a controversial candidate OTL with a lot of people opposing him. In which case someone else might end up in the White House.

Nixon fighting to the bitter end all the way to impeachment might make seriously difficult for Ford to pardon him, at least in the form of OTL blanket pardon. On the other hand, he might still give him some kind of limited clemency to commute the sentence to time served or house arrest and keep him from jail, especially if the stress of it all makes Nixon's health take a turn for the worse or conviction takes place after a long and bitter court fight. IMO the large majority of Americans would see impeachment as sufficient retribution for Nixon's misdeeds and have little appetite for the national shame of a former President behind bars. Before the pardon, even many Democrats saw Ford as a clean, nice guy uninvolved in the Administration's misdeeds that would help America turn a new page. Without the pardon to taint him, he would have a serious chance to win in '76.
