Well, aside from Edith Wilson not being able to hijack the Executive Branch for 2 and a half years, how will Thomas Marshall handle that period?

the desire for "a return to normalcy" as that Ohio Senator put it, will see Marshall's defeat in 1920 if he chooses to run.

Despite what The Other Place thought, Wilson's death won't lead to murmurings about a constitutional amendment, as, in this timeline, he's simply died and not been crippled and reduced to a shadow of himself.

It will take the atmosphere of something like the Cold War to really spur an amendment covering a disabled or incapacitated President.

Nope, you forget a certain Roosevelt who died in office and could have died earlier.

That already was covered in law, because there were others who already died. The problem with Wilson was that he just couldn't do the job while still alive, meaning that the succession of the vice president didn't kick in.

Things like hiding the truth of the situation will always happen. No one likes having to give up even a hint of power after all.

I wouldn't go as far as calling her the first female president, but she would have been one of the better presidents if she were.

The U.S. goes to war with Mexico, as nearly occurred at the instigation of Wilson's Secretary of State prior to his recovery. Border incidents, attacks on American citizens (including diplomatic personnel which helped bring the 1919 crisis to a peak), allegations reviewed in Congress of Pro-German and Pro-Bolshevik actions/sympathies) and the impending possible nationalization of American oil interests was the cause. The oil industry, large amounts of the media, and both parties were in favor of it and the Military had confirmed they could carry out operations; what derailed it was Wilson's recovery. Had the war gone ahead, it's entirely possible the U.S. would've sought territorial gains, up to all of Mexico itself, as the Texan Delegation was suggesting and was meeting with support in Congress.

No, they would have to impeach and remove Wilson. Disability is not a high crime or misdemeanor. I think President Marshall makes the compromises necessary to ratify the Treaty of Versailles. The US in the League won't make a difference. Hitler and the Japanese militarists still come to power and still start World War II. I agree that Marshall loses in 1920. With the war and the turmoil of 1919, the vast majority of voters want a change. Warren Harding is still the ideal compromise candidate for the Republicans.
