I was thinking about an alternate US Army structure and size post Iraq.

If you want to be capable of fighting a counterinsurgency war on the scale of Iraq in the early 2000s while simultaneously fighting a major theatre level war the size of Desert Storm AND being able to deter or hold off a potential third threat, you'd need an army that was about the size of the US Army circa 2010.

In this period, most divisions had four or even five BCTs on top of their divisional fires, aviation and support elements.

So what if Ukraine happens earlier, or a fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis occurs before the post-Iraw drawdowns. How might the US Military be structured?

My thinking would be that all divisions would have three BCTs, though some of those would be ARNG units. Cutting down the number of brigades per Division would allow for more divisions to be stood up without the need for a significant expansion in personnel or equipment.

For this to work, the US Army could split it's divisions into four categories.

The first category would be heavy divisions. These would have three Armored BCTs, plus a CAB and a divisional MLRS battery. Your heavy divisions would be the 1st Cav, 1st Armored, 1st Infantry, 3rd Infantry & 24th Infantry.

To do this, you'd reflag the original 3d Infantry at Fort Stewart as the 24th Infantry, marking that as XVIII Corps' heavy Division.
Meanwhile, the separate US Army heavy BCTs in Europe would be placed under the command of the new 3d Infantry Division, which would stand up at Vilseck with a BCT forward in Poland and two more back in Germany. Any infantry & Stryker BCTs that were under the command of 1st Armored, 1st Infantry & 1st Cav would be rebuilt as Armored BCTs.
Meanwhile, the 2nd & 4th Infantry Divisions would be structured as 'Tricap' divisions. What this would mean would be that both divisions would have one Armored BCT, one Stryker BCT and one infantry/air assault BCT. Divisionally, each would have a CAB capable of supporting battalion-sized air assault manoeuvres as well as providing CAS. Each Tricap division would get a HIMARS battery at the divisional level.
The third type of Division would be the Stryker Infantry Division. The 7th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis would be the key unit structured this way, with three SBCTs, a CAB and a HIMARS battery.
Finally, you have the light divisions. These would have three IBCTs and their aviation brigades, and possibly a HIMARS battery as well. Those divisions would be the 82d Airborne, 101st Air Assault, 25th Infantry & 10th Mountain Divisions.

So in total, you have five heavy divisions; 1AD, 1CD, 1ID, 3ID & 24ID; two Tricap Divisions; 2ID & 4ID; one Stryker Division; 7ID; and four light divisions; 10MD, 25ID, 82ABD & 101AAD.

On top of this, you would have a heavier National Guard with several IBCTs keeping an ABCT structure. As for Armored Cavalry, I'm thinking that V Corps in Germany and III Corps in Texas would retain 2ACR & 3ACR respectively, albeit with an altered structure.

You would need more than that.

The 2010 Army had an increased number of BCTs, but still had 10 divisions in total. The type of capability you are after is

Counterinsurgency: 6-8 divisions
Major Theatre War: 6 divisions
Deterrence: 3 divisions
Bottom of the Barrel Strategic Reserve: 2 divisions

In other words, something like 1990 force levels. Your putative 12 division force structure is way below what would be needed, something which has come up before in some of your speculative orbats.

To take on a major theatre war, two corps are needed, with the majority of the forces involved being heavy divisions. Strategic reserve would go to the airborne/air assault forces, leaving the roles of counterinsurgency and deterrence. You would need some heavies for a credible deterrent, whereas CI can use lighter motorised infantry.

Tricap is a solution in search of a problem. It isn't needed for either counterinsurgency or for heavy peer level combat, nor is it useful for such.

What would be the purpose of a whole Stryker division? Maybe in the idealised future that Shinseki and others forecast in the late 1990s, but that hasn't come to pass at all.

Long story short:

1.) You can't get away with trying to do the mission of ~18-20 divisions with 12.
2.) There isn't a demonstrated need for new divisional types in your scenario.
3.) To cope with Cold War level missions, you need a large force model.
4.) Heavy mechanised infantry divisions can do CI, but light infantry divisions can't do heavy combat.

If the British Army was to expand in 2010 rather than facing the Army 2020 cuts, how might that go?

I have some basic ideas:

#1) Placing 3 Commando Bde & 16 Air Assault Brigade under the nominal command of 6 (UK) Division, which did exist in 2010.

#2) Forming a Gurkha infantry brigade. This would require significant expansion, with the formation of a third Gurkha battalion. The main issue here is brigade assets, however. Where might they gain REME and logistics support from? And especially artillery. They could integrate with the TA and gain 100 Royal Artillery, or would it be wiser to form an additional L118 regiment?

#3) The forming up of corps assets for the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. This would include artillery, engineers, logistics and medical units, making AARC deployable as I British Corps in the unlikely event that it is deployed outside of NATO tasking.

Any other suggestions/ideas?

Do you know that there is a third Gurkha battalion? They formed one last year IIRC. Either way, adding a 'standard' infantry battalion would still probably be likely: infantry units are often attached to 3 Commando Brigade.

Do you know that there is a third Gurkha battalion? They formed one last year IIRC. Either way, adding a 'standard' infantry battalion would still probably be likely: infantry units are often attached to 3 Commando Brigade.

Yeah, I remember hearing about the third battalion being raised. IIRC they are a specialised infantry battalion, however, which is pretty much a cadre unit lacking real combat power. I could reform the 3rd Battalion and add a light role infantry battalion to the Gurkha brigade for additional punch, which is probably the direction I'll go in with the ORBAT.

The ORBAT below this is INCOMPLETE.
It is missing the Poles and Hungarians. The Poles would be a big part of this too.
The ORBAT goes with my Red Stars story for a June 1988 war in Europe. It doesn't cover Soviet/WarPac air strength elsewhere.

The 16th Air Army, the Naval Air Group and the missing Polish Air Army report to the commander of Western Strategic Direction directly as fighter and key attack reserve assets.
The 14th & 24th & 36th Air Armies will support operations of the First German Front in the southern theatre with the 24th being the deep strike force.
The 4th & 15th & 26th Air Armies will support operations of the Second German Front in the northern theatre with the 4th being the deep strike force and the 15th, plus many of the Poles, having a Jutland/Denmark focus.

Earlier in the year, I wrote a short fiction piece about a different start to WW2 where Hitler was killed in October 1939 in Poland and Goering took over. A war with the Western Allies took place and Germany achieved a great victory in France in 1940. The 'miracle of Calais' saw much of the British Army escape, with equipment too, from France before that nation fell. The story was meant to continue to a different North African conflict starting in mid 1941.
I wrote several British Army (plus Commonwealth forces) ORBATs for that conflict. The story will not continue but I have these. They took ages to get correct!
I'll post them now.
