What could have brought about a rise of and the actions of armed terrorists in the radical leftist vein in Britain in the 1945 - 2000 era? I'm thinking of British counterpart groups to those of the Red Army Faction, the Weather Underground or the Symbionese Liberation Army. Ideas?

I'd assume a SPA grouping would be primarily focused on Scotish issues. The RAF / WU / SLA which I referenced weren't about separatism but nationwide movements.

It depends on the circumstances at the time and what kind of campaign was being waged. It wasn't as if the IRA & INLA had widespread support in Ulster or the ROI during their armed campaign. It all comes down to many things. All told, I'm unconvinced any SPA / SNLA would emerge anyway. I was thinking more of a British, nationwide thing with the thread idea.

Something like that, yes! I was looking for a reason why there could be a rise of such a group though and an environment which would allow them to operate.

I'm wondering if that sort of group would clandestinely receive funding from the Eastern bloc, i.e. Soviet Russia deciding that they're sufficiently useful idiots to help destabilize Britain. Which, of course, UK law enforcement and intelligence agencies would have to crack down on once they realize what's up.
Still, could left-wing terrorism give Britain its own Red Scare, and rampant McCarthyism to follow, that makes the UK more right-wing going forwards?

The Soviet Union spending money and materiel in the shadows might be enough, anything to destabilize a major NATO member.

Barring what the general public in either bloc knows, I'm unsure whether their funding and potential supply chains would remain in the dark for long as Western intelligence susses out what's going on eventually.
