Not too surprising that it lasted for decades in some places, when you consider the number of Hispanic immigrants (and their descendants) who still use Spanish as their main language.
Does make me wonder, though: how long would it have lasted were it not for World War II?

I think the big issue was possibly more WWI than WWII as it and some German led sabotage attacks, as well as plans for moblising German migrants in the US as some sort of secret underground army cause a fair amount of tension and more pressure to integrate. Of which an obvious step would be switching to English as their primary tongue.
