Belarus, a full-on dictatorship, is having a presidential election in August. Lukashenko is trailing fourth post in the polls.
What does he do? Arrest his main challenger, Viktar Babaryka, who has a stonking poll lead, on charges of plotting a coup.

Well it makes perfect sense, if your an autocratic dictator who's desperate to stay in power and facing increasing popular opposition as the Reuters link Zyobot posted showed. Not sure why he seems to be claiming that Babaryka was a Russian agent but possibly he's come to some sort of agreement with Putin to make a token gesture against Russia to weaken western interest in opposing him. Or possibly there is some connection or the rift with Moscow is deepening. Hopefully he fails but preferably without too much violence or foreign intervention - especially from his neighbour from the east.
The wiki item for Viktar_Babaryka is very brief but doesn't mention his working for the Belarus branch of Gazprombank but possibly its due to lack of info or the poster of it doesn't want that mentioned? |

Well the key factor was his personal vote. But he only cast it ~1.8M times.  |
