Let us say that in November or December 1963, it is proved that the killing of Kennedy was proved beyond all doubt to be the work of a hostile nation state. Does that lead to war? Will LBJ take America to war to avenge an assassinated president killed in a state-sanctioned action? If it was Castro's Cuba, would the US throw aside previous agreements on non-invasion and invade to depose Castro? If it was the Soviet Union, would LGB start World War Three over this?

If Cuba almost certainly. Plus I suspect Khrushchev wouldn't seriously oppose this if there was clear evidence of Castro being responsible.
If it was clearly the Soviets then could go either way. There would be huge anger but is LGJ - or the rest of the US establishment for that matter - willing to risk a nuclear exchange, or even a very, very expensive war in Europe and elsewhere? Especially since conquering a nuclear armed super-power is a very iffy idea. Its definitely a Casus belli but just because there is a legally accepted cause for war doesn't mean the US will take that option given the potential costs.
I could see a much more heated cold war with probably a lot of clashes in border areas. Hopefully not a full scale war in Europe even if 'just' conventional but your likely to see some very bloody proxy wars as well as a major build up by both sides in Europe, Korea etc. Probably Apollo gets cancelled as the US goes on close to a war footing. It might also divert the civil rights and great society movements which could have long term problems for the US.
I doubt it would be the Soviets, at least not unless they go very hard line after the Cuban Crisis and Khrushchev is removed. What might happen would be that some group inside the SU, especially on the intelligence/terrorist side decides their not happy with the results of the Cuban Crisis and to strike back at Kennedy. In which case a lot would depend on what Moscow does.
If any other 3rd part, of which I could only really think of China or North Korea then almost certain war and probably including nukes in the former case.

LBJ would not start World War Three with the Soviets over them killing Kennedy. But if it was proven to be Castro I tend to think LBJ would have indeed moved against Cuba not withstanding all previous agreements with the Soviets. The Soviets were not going to war just to save Castro but the American people at the least would've demanded Castro's blood in exchange for the death of Kennedy.

If I were a foreign power willing to assassinate JFK, the man I would hire would be Guy Banister. As much as I hate conspiracies, that guy was the closest thing, ever, from a "real world" conspiracy. It is no surprise James Ellroy used the man in his "fictional conspiracy" American tabloid.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_BanisterThis is not a conspiracy theory page, but the man wikipedia entry. I use to think, just reading that page must have converted many honorable people into conspirationists
Throw David Ferrie into the lot, and you have the closest thing in the real world from a (non existing) conspiracy.
Banister and Ferrie are perfect fuel for conspirationists... some limited relationships with Oswald, involvement in dirty tricks, and deaths a short time after JFK assassination.

I'm not sure how crazy Castro is to assassinate Kennedy. He isn't stupid enough to draw the wrath of the United States for the third time.
