My dad was a commercial fisherman skipper/owner of an Eastern rig dragger/trawler built in 1947 to fulfill the contract to replace fishing vessels commandeered by the US for the Navy and Coast Guard in WWII.  The yard that built his boat had been under contract to build 110 ft. SCs in WWII.   In fact, dad pointed out to me a few WWI SCs that were converted to fishing boats and were just reaching their life's end in the late 1950s.  WWII SCs for various reasons were not suitable for fishing vessels.

Some of the larger pre war fishing draggers/trawlers were taken into the Nav and CG to serve as minesweepers and Sub Chasers during the early months.  Minesweepers worked out OK but as Sub chasers they proved next to useless and were soon converted to sweepers.  The USCG did use 10 of the large Trawlers for patrol cutters on the Greenland patrol and they did outstanding service.  Very, very tough on the crews.

Anyone who wants to read a great book about the USCG Greenland patrol Trawlers should find a copy of

Ice Brothers by Sloan Wilson.  It stands as one of my favorite sea stories of all time.  Right up there with The Caine Mutiny IMO.

  Don't let the animal rights people see that.  Using kittens as protective padding on military helmets.   I doubt they would do much to stop an incoming bullet or piece of shrapnel however.

  Thanks.  Never heard of that earthquake before so that was interesting an it might have had some longer term role in the decline of Spartan manpower resources.  Sounds like part of the problem was simply they were too inflexible to adopt to new conditions.  Plus given the Persian and later Macedonian interests in keeping Greece itself divided and how eager so many Greek city states were in maintaining that division it was always going to be difficult for Greece to successfully unite under any internal leader/state.
