Back in 2011, during the leadership race for the Scottish Conservatives, one of the candidates proposed breaking the semi-autonomous party away from the UK wide force and making the Scottish Conservatives truly independent like they have been before 1965.
Murdo Fraser lost the leadership race to Ruth Davidson by four hundred votes and his idea was never implemented.
Let us say he won that leadership contest. Without Davidson, the Conservatives in Scotland might never have achieved the success that they did in recent years... or maybe Fraser takes them to new heights?
As to a new party, the idea was to follow the German CDU-CSU route with parties independent but in an electoral coalition; before 1965, this was done in Scotland with the Unionist Party being the old Scottish Conservatives. Could this have worked out in practice post-2011?
Names for the new party suggested by Fraser were various: Scottish Reform Party, Scottish Unionists, the Scottish Progressives, the Progressive Conservatives, Scotland First, Scotland Forward, Caledonian Party or the Caledonians. They couldn't use the name the Scottish Unionist Party as a tiny, unimportant group had already long ago registered that name. Which name sounds best?
