Let us say that after a long time of being undecided, Hillary Clinton doesn't run for the Senate seat in New York in 2000. Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani self-implodes and someone else from the Democrats wins. Clinton runs a foundation / does charity work for four years. In 2004, when it becomes clear that there will be an open Senate seat in her native Illinois - Bill is from Arkansas, she's from Illinois - Hillary decides not to waste another opportunity like New York could have been. The leading Republican candidate was Jack Ryan, someone who like Giuliani four years earlier would also later self-implode.
An outsider preparing for a Senate run in Illinois was the little-known but well-regarded Barack Obama. He had been getting ready since 2002 to mount a primary challenge against the Democratic office-holder in what would later be a very expensive campaign for all involved. What if Hillary Clinton jumps into this race? Does Obama bow out when faced with the formidable power of the former First Lady? Does he stay in the race, once more taking on the establishment? Outcome of a Hillary-Obama primary fight?
