John Major became leader of the Conservatives in late 1990 and that was followed by a 'successful war' in the Gulf. Under Thatcher, the Conservatives had won two general elections called four years apart. Major waited for the five year term of office to run out though before going to the polls in 1992. What if he called an election in 1991? Would he have still won? How would Kinnock-led Labour have fared? And the still new Lib-Dems too?

Suspect the Tories would still have won as Labour was still struggling with its past and anti-Labour propaganda by the press so I can't see them doing better. The Lib-Dems are likely to do better but with the electoral systems the Tories are still likely to get a large majority from ~40% of the total vote cast.
