575 stevep457 AD is the year when Marjoram took power in the Western Roman Empire. Given US naval tech, they are going to reach Europe and back within months and figure out what year they are in shortly afterwards. What will US do with the almost dead Rome? Rome is declining fast but not yet dead. If Marjoram manages to aquire even 50-60 cannons from the US and possibly some mercenaries, he is going to turn the tide. @lordroel TheRomanSlayer

Does Rome even know what gunpowder consists of, and if they have the capability to make them? Other than that, I would have thought that 1790 US would aim to at least take aim at conquering downtime Ireland and the British Isles.

Guess Roman Empire still hold a fascination during 1790 so at least exploration will be done. Though as Western Roman Empire is going down the drain ERE may be a more interesting object with its position tying Europe and Middle East together.
Seeing the old land may be a wish for every American at this stage; being both Christians should help in understanding each others position.
Gunpowder - the Americans could offer it to Majorian but why prop up a drowning man? Restoration of Empire? The realities of Western Europe is that Barbarians are ruling the lands; Bishops rule the cities. Both will want to keep their demesne. Guns for defeating the Huns? When they realize what is going on they will be using their superior mobility to turn on the back of veritable immobile artillery unless the Americans provide some carronade.
Nobody knows but in 80 years the Fimbul Winter with associated plauges are going to hit - goodbye.

Even if it is delayed, we still should see first steam engines by 550 AD.

We are so far ahead of anybody that just walking up and saying give me land should be enough to see them acquire any new land. As for Rome I can see them buying some cannons. Once they see the use of such arms they would be fools to not get their hands on that sort of firepower. Guns may be slow to reload but get enough of them and they should be able to push back and regain their lost territorial claims. I doubt they can regain all their lost lands but I think they should be able to stop the fall of their empire. A big part of why it fall was weak leaders and I'm sure massive levels of corruption. The 1790's United States should be able to help them beat back the barbarians to the north.
