=====================================================
I had a layover in Wilmington, Saturday, thanks to a mechanical in the plane flying up from Guatamala, and a whole day to kill while they got me a new booking to Buffalo. Guess what was sitting out there, just begging for me to pay her a visit, so I could put STEEL to this story?
Do you know I sat me carcass down in number three main turret, main local control to the left of the Ford Mark II FCC, on that hard cold uncushioned bicycle seat in the left side of the rangefinder and marveled how anyone could see anything in that eyepiece and work the wheels, or that anyone my size, (I am just an average 2022 female) could even FIT in that cramped alleyway behind the stereo coincidence rangefinder where they had two men working the rangefinder, two data inputters for the Ford, the chief of the section and a talker?
Or later on up near the binnacle on 02 deck, how did they get the OOD, the chief of the watch, the messenger runner, the helmsman, the navigation party and the other half dozen other fellows into the tiny compartment where they actually STEERED the ship? The engine room telegraph looked like it was lifted right off a Cunard liner!
The combat information center, was all the size and internal volume of a Volkswagon microbus. If you thought the bridge was crowded, you should see that telephone booth.
=====================================================
I managed to see the ammunition stowage for the portside number two 5 inch twin mount. YIKES. The armor in that compartment was all of 3 inches thick. Anything that got through the main belt upper strake was going to blow out the starboard amidships superstructure... a horrible design flaw.
After a day on the Showboat, I was amazed about how much of what I thought I knew was just wrong.
I'd just like to thank you for taking the time to critique my sorry attempt at an ATL. We are all Good my friend.
I will now down 4 fingers of single malt and thank God you were NEVER my CO, XO, Dept head or chief.
but
John T Stensrud III was and that is a story for another day.
