For a timeline I made (going to add more to it) where the white population remains around 1/5 of S.A.'s population. And the African population is roughly 2/3 of the population.

Indeed. These are utterly, utterly unconnected events. In my view, this simply isn’t alternate history, as there is no relationship of causal connection.
Now, the question of a different South African population is a good and valid one. It has long running consequences.
The issue of Mandela dying is also a separate one, albeit a bit less interesting as it is phrased in a very closed manner. I would draw a parallel to the ideas you had about Ethiopia. The minor/secondary PoD is really quite simple to answer and without huge consequence, detracting from the major one.
I would suggest separating the two. The Mandela one really belongs in a thread for Minor PoDs/AH scenarios, as there isn’t a great deal to it. The population issue is big enough to merit its own thread. That will actually get a better combination of answers for you.
I’ve previously used the analogy of a multi-bet. For those unfamiliar with the concept, imagine the following:
A.) Jimmy has $30 that he wants to spend on some soccer bets.
B.) Bayern Munich v Ajax Amsterdam; Manchester United v Chelsea; Real Madrid v AC Milan are the games
C.) Suppose that the odds for the first team in each match to win 2-1 are set by the bookmakers at 5/1, 8/1 and 10/1
D.) The chances of getting a win and a return on his money in each of the three cases aren’t that high individually. Jimmy’s total profit would be $170 ($200 winnings - $30 bet)
E.) The likelihood of them all happening according to the bookmakers is 5 x 8 x 10, or 400/1. Jimmy could win a fair bit, but it is at long odds for a reason. If Jimmy came to me for advice, I’d say that, although winning $11970 is a bloody nice idea, it is also bloody unlikely. He’s better off making 3 small bets, as even the most straightforward of them will see him in the black.
Insofar as your multi PoDs go, you’re Jimmy. They aren’t winning you ‘money’. A better bet is keeping it straightforward.
