One Step Beyond - a alternate Space Race

Its been a while, do not know if i am still able to write AH timeline but i will try if anybody has interest in it.

It will use a lot of my Kingdom of the Netherlands : a alternate star trek timeline, mixed with the For All Mankind universe and OTL and what i can think of.

So here is the start.

1963

November 21st 1963

President Kennedy get the flu and has to cancel his visit to Dallas, Texas.

December 10th 1963

Chuck Yeager dies after his parachutes fails to deploy he is forces to parachute from a NF-104A rocket-augmented aerospace trainer when his aircraft goes out of control at 108,700 feet (nearly 21 miles up) and crashes.

1964

January 3rd 1964

United States President Kennedy gives his third State of the Union Address.

United States Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona announced that he would seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Goldwater said in a statement that "I have not heard from any announced Republican candidate a declaration of conscience or of political position that could possibly offer to the American people a clear choice in the next presidential election," and added that "I will not change my beliefs to win votes. I will offer a choice, not an echo.

January 9th 1964

Armed clashes between United States troops and Panamanian civilians in the Panama Canal Zone precipitate a major international crisis, resulting in the deaths of 21 Panamanians and 4 United States soldiers.

January 10th 1964

President of Panama, Roberto Chiari, breaks of diplomatic relations with the United States as result of the armed clashes which saw 21 Panamanians death.

January 15th 1964

President of Panama, Roberto Chiari, declares that Panama will not re-establish diplomatic ties with the United States until it agreed to open negotiations on a new treaty

January 22nd 1964

United States President Kennedy and Canada's Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson signed an agreement at the White House, establishing the jointly-operated Roosevelt Campobello International Park at the former summer home of the late President Franklin Roosevelt in New Brunswick.

The United States Joint Chiefs of Staff sent a classified memorandum to United States Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, urging an expansion of United States involvement in the Vietnam War, advocating heavy bombing of North Vietnam, and deployment of troops in South Vietnam for an eventual invasion of the North.

January 29th 1964

The unmanned Apollo 1 Saturn launcher test attains Earth orbit.

February 4th 1964

In a ceremony at the White House, the Twenty-fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution was officially certified, 12 days after it had been ratified by the 38 states. Bernard L. Boutin, the Administrator of General Services signed the certificate as required by law, and United States President Kennedy signed as a witness to the amendment, which outlawed the poll tax in federal elections.

March 29th 1964

The European Space Research Organization is established.

April 3rd 1964

The United States and Panama come to a agreement to an immediate resumption of diplomatic relations and the United States agreeing to adopt procedures for the "elimination of the causes of conflict between the two countries".

April 20th 1964

President Kennedy in New York and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Moscow simultaneously announce plans to cut back the production of materials for making nuclear weapons.

May 28th 1964

The unmanned Apollo 2 Saturn test is launched into Earth orbit.

July 2nd 1964

President Kennedy signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, abolishing racial segregation in the United States.

July 31st 1964

Ranger 7 takes 4,316 pictures before crashing on the Moon. These are the first close-up photographs of the moon with images 1,000 times clearer than anything ever seen from telescopes on Earth.

October 12th 1964

The Soviet Union launches Voskhod 1, which has a three man crew for the first time.

October 14th 1964

Nikita Khrushchev is deposed as leader of the Soviet Union. Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin assume power.

November 3rd 1964

President Kennedy defeats Republican challenger Barry Goldwater with an overwhelming percent of the popular vote.

January 4th 1965

President Kennedy gives his fourth State of the Union Address.

January 19th 1965

The unmanned Gemini 2 is launched on a sub-orbital test of various spacecraft systems.

February 20th 1965

Ranger 8 crashes into the Moon after a successful mission of photographing possible landing sites for the Apollo program.

March 18th 1965

Soviet Cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov leaves his spacecraft Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes, becoming the first person to walk in space.

March 21st 1965

NASA launches Ranger 9, the last in a series of unmanned lunar space probes.

March 23rd 1965

NASA launches Gemini 3, carrying the United States' first 2-person crew (Gus Grissom and John Young) into Earth orbit.

April 13th 1965

Sergei Korolev (Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft) suffers his 2nd hart attack (his first was in 1960s), not wanting to lose him he is order to transfer some of his work load to Vasily Mishin and not something that Korolev likes to Lieutenant-General Kerim Abbasali oghlu Kerimov, head of the Central Directorate of the Space Forces (TsUKOS) of the Ministry of Defense

April 24th 1965

In the Dominican Republic, officers and civilians loyal to deposed President Juan Bosch mutiny against the right-wing junta running the country and set up a provisional government. Forces loyal to the deposed military junta stage a countercoup the next day and civil war breaks out, although the new government retains its hold on power.

April 28th 1965

United States troops are sent to the Dominican Republic by President Kennedy, "for the stated purpose of protecting US citizens and preventing an alleged Communist takeover of the country", thus thwarting the possibility of "another Cuba"

June 3rd 1965

Astronaut Edward Higgins White makes the first US spacewalk from Gemini 4.

Augusts 21st 1965

Gemini 5 (Gordon Cooper, Pete Conrad) is launched on the first 1-week flight, as well as the first test of fuel cells for electrical power.

January 11th 1966

The first SR-71 Blackbird spy plane goes into service at Beale air force base.

January 12th 1966

President Kennedy states that the United States should stay in the South Vietnam until the Communist aggression there is ended.

January 27th 1966

The British government promises the United States that British troops in Malaysia will stay until more peaceful conditions occur in the region.

January 31st 1966

The Soviet Union launches Luna 9 toward the Moon.

February 3rd 1966

The unmanned Luna 9 spacecraft makes a controlled rocket-assisted landing on the Moon.

February 7th 1966

President Kennedy of the United States and Nguyễn Cao Kỳ of South Vietnam convene with other officials in a summit in Honolulu, Hawaii to discuss the course of the Vietnam War.

February 16th 1966

The French republic performs an underground nuclear test at Ecker, Algeria.

February 20th 1966

Former United States admiral Chester W. Nimitz dies at age 80.

March 1st 1966

Soviet space probe Venera 3 crashes on Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to land on the planet's surface.

March 8th 1966

The United States announces it will substantially increase the number of its troops in Vietnam.

March 10th 1966

The Netherlands Crown Princess Beatrix marries Claus von Amsberg.

March 11th 1966

French President Charles de Gaulle states that French troops will be taken out of NATO and that all French NATO bases and HQ's must be closed within a year.

March 16th 1966

United States spacecraft Gemini 8 (David Scott, Neil Armstrong) docks with an Agena target vehicle.

March 29th 1966

The 23rd Communist Party Conference is held in the Soviet Union; Leonid Brezhnev demands that United States troops leave South Vietnam.

March 31st 1966

Soviet Union launches the lunar orbiter Luna 10.

April 2nd 1966

Luna 10 enters orbit of the Moon.

June 2nd 1966

United States lunar lander Surveyor 1 lands in Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon.

June 3rd 1966

The 7th United States two-man flight onboard Gemini 9 is launched.

July 5th 1966

A Saturn I rocket (Serial number SA-203) carrying a unmanned Apollo 3 is launched at Cape Canaveral (OTL: With President Kennedy still alive, The cape is still called Cape Canaveral).

July 18th 1966

Gemini 10 (John Young, Michael Collins) is launched from the United States. After docking with an Agena target vehicle, the astronauts set a world altitude record of 763 km.

July 24th 1966

A United States Air Force F-4C Phantom is shot down by a North Vietnamese SAM-2 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Hanoi, the first loss of a United States aircraft to a North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile.

July 28th 1966

The United States announces that a Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance plane has disappeared over Cuba.

August 5th 1966

Martin Luther King Jr. while leading a civil rights march in Chicago, is killed when a shot if fired from a white mob. As word of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. spreads through Chicago, residents explode in anger, burning and looting stores by the hundreds and attacking non-black passers-by. Governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner Jr. complies with Mayor of Chicago Richard J. Daley's request to send in the Illinois National Guard.

August 8th 1966

On the third day of the Chicago Riot, the younger brother of Martin Luther King Jr., Baptist minister and civil rights activist A. D. King makes an emotional plea for peace, appearing before TV cameras to ask in a trembling voice, "This is now what my brother wanted?"

August 10th 1966

Lunar Orbiter 1, the first U.S. spacecraft to orbit the moon, is launched.

In Chicago the citywide curfew enacted at the height of the violence is lifted.

August 13th 1966

The Beatles hold a press conference in Detroit, during which John Lennon apologizes for his "more popular than Jesus" remark, saying, "I didn't mean it as a lousy anti-religious thing." (OTL: this was done in Chicago but due to the Chicago Riot, the Beatles cancelled their performance in Chicago and went to their second performance instead).

September 1st 1966

United Nations Secretary-General U Thant declares that he will not seek re-election.

September 12th 1966

Gemini 11 (Richard F. Gordon, Jr., Pete Conrad) docks with an Agena target vehicle.

November 6th 1966

Lunar Orbiter 2 is launched.

November 8th 1966

Screen actor Ronald Reagan is elected Governor of California.

November 15th 1966

Gemini 12 (James A. Lovell, Buzz Aldrin) splashes down safely in the Atlantic Ocean, 600 km (370 mi) east of the Bahamas.

December 2nd 1966

United Nations Secretary-General U Thant agrees to serve a second term as United Nations Secretary General.

December 13th 1966

Richard Paul Pavlick, a 79-year old retired postal worker who had attempted to assassinate President-elect John F. Kennedy on December 11, 1960, released from a mental hospital in his home state of New Hampshire is denied (OTL: with President John F. Kennedy still alive and president, it was decided to keep Richard Paul Pavlick in the mental hospital unlike OTL when he was released).

December 23rd 1966

The destroyer USS O'Brien (DD-725) is sunk when shells fired from North Vietnam's shore batteries hit here depth charges. 224 of here 336 crewmen are killed making it the worst lose of the United States Navy sins the end of World War II (OTL: USS O'Brien only suffers two death).
