Cliff (John Ratzenberger) hears that "Jeopardy!" is coming to Boston for contestant tryouts. He eagerly goes and takes the test. Later on, he tells the gang he passed and will appear on the show.
Now here's what's different with the episode:
-"Jeopardy!" doesn't actually come to Boston to tape shows. The tryouts for the show do, but the show itself does not. Instead, Cliff flies out to Los Angeles to appear on the show. Woody (Woody Harrelson), Carla (Rhea Perlman) and Norm (George Wendt) go with him. They sit in the audience while the rest of the Cheers gang watches on TV from the bar.
-When Johnny Gilbert (playing himself) introduces the contestants, he actually says where they're from; "A doctor and chief of neurosurgeon from Seattle, Washington, Milford Reynolds. A lawyer and mother of 6 from Miami, Florida, Agnes Borsic. And a mailman from Boston, Massachusetts, Cliff Clavin." (NOTE: When Johnny introduces Cliff, there's still light laughter from the audience.). Then he introduces Alex Trebek (playing himself) like normal.
-Because, they're still out in LA, Alex doesn't mention anything about taking the show out on location. As Alex talks, Carla says that he's really cute.
-We actually get to see Cliff play Jeopardy! Both the Jeopardy! and Double Jeopardy! rounds. Of course, for time constraints, we don't actually get to see the whole entire rounds. Example: In one shot of the board, all the clues are up there. In another, only half of them still are.
-We don't just get to see Cliff ring in and give responses. Milford and Agnes both do as well. They ring in, give responses either right or wrong.
-The categories for the Jeopardy! round are still Civil Servants, Stamps From Around The World, Mothers And Sons, Beer, Bar Trivia and Celibacy. The categories for the Double Jeopardy! round are Postal Codes, Catalogs, Food Samples, Single People, Rivals and Little Known Facts.
-Cliff does pretty well in both rounds. He even lands on a Daily Double, wagers everything (a true Daily Double), gets the correct response and therefore doubles his score.
-Cliff still goes into Final Jeopardy! with $22,000. The category for Final Jeopardy! is still Movies. The clue is still "Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwartz and Lucille LeSueur". As the "Think!" music plays, Cliff still tries to look over Agnes' shoulder to see what she's writing down. Alex catches him. Cliff denies doing it. When the music ends, Alex still reveals the contestants' responses. Cliff (because he's in the lead) is still last. He still writes down "Who are 3 people who have never been in my kitchen?", which is wrong. Cliff risks everything and loses it all. Cliff still tries to protest, but to no avail.
-Later on at a bar, a dejected Cliff calls the Cheers gang to tell them he lost on "Jeopardy!" But they already know since they saw the show. That obviously doesn't help Cliff's mood. Then Cliff goes to the restroom. Alex comes in and Carla sees him. She tells him that he's cuter in person than on TV.
-Cliff comes out of the restroom and sees Alex and the two of them talk. Alex tells Cliff that the judges made a mistake by not accepting his response and then announces his decision to quit hosting "Jeopardy!" But Cliff talks him out of it. He goes on to brag about how he "saved" "Jeopardy!".
-Norm tells Alex that it was nice of him to come in and make Cliff feel better. Of course, Alex wasn't actually going to quit hosting "Jeopardy!". He tells Norm that he just came in for a beer, but then he saw Cliff and figured he'd better say something, so he just made up that story about quitting. He then says Cliff scares him. Norm replies "You too, huh?" The episode ends there.
So what changes is Carla, Cliff, Woody and Norm all fly out to LA for Cliff's appearance on "Jeopardy!" And because the majority of the episode focuses on Cliff's appearance on "Jeopardy!", they don't focus much time on the subplot with Sam (Ted Danson) losing his black book with women's phone numbers. Instead, he along with Rebecca (Kirstie Alley), Frasier (Kelsey Grammer), Paul (Paul Willson) and other bar regulars watching Cliff on "Jeopardy!"
What doesn't change is the episode still goes onto become one of "Cheers"' most popular episodes and is still talked about 30+ years later.
