I am not sure if this hasn't been discussed before but here we go.
1670 AD Republic of Venice is 1 year after the end of a major war with the Ottomans in which it lost Crete.
Some initial thoughts: 1. Technological superiority is clearly there. The Venetians possess gunpowder weapons, plate armor, advanced fortifications (the star fort), advanced naval vessels and they also possess...
... paper and the printing press.
This alone is extremely important as it allows the Venetians to generate books at a rate that is unimaginable for people of 500 BC. There should be a major literary boom especially in the Greek city states and the Achaemenid Empire once the tech gets there.
2. The geopolitics of the region are quite complex. There are Italic tribes and Etruscan city states to the west, various Illyrian tribes to the east and the Greeks to the southeast. There is also a nascent Carthage and obviously the Achaemenid Empire
3. As for whether the Venetians are going to support the Greeks against the Persians - I don't know. Classical education is a big part of education of the elites and they hold Ancient Greece in very high regard but on the other hand the Greeks are still pagans.
4. There is going to be a massive loss of income from trade initially but Venice should rebound from it. I don't think Venice is going to expand much territory wise.
Any ideas?
