Wouldn't there only be a basis for this if there are clear signs that the Mexican government [of which I think there were 2-3 claimants to that title at the time] had actually accepted the German approach? I know there was resentment over American actions in the past and the recent clash with Pancho Villa' forces but that had also shown that Mexico would have no chance against the US so it would require a real case of insanity in Mexico city to give the German approach any consideration.

[Like the stupid claim by Pearse during his coup attempt in Dublin in 1916 that he was getting aid from Germany]. Otherwise Germany could claim it was supporting just about every nation in Latin America and is the US going to declare war on and occupy all of them? |

Germany does not have the means to send a submarine filled with weapons and supplies or two to Mexico to arm whoever they support. |

Mexico at that time is a mess. I don't see much gain by the Americans launching an all-out invasion. There was some intervention to protect US interests, but no invasion.

They already had the ability to trade with Mexico, and more territory (full of nonwhites, I might add) would only be a hassle. All the disparate groups would unite to oppose them. All I can see for them is a quagmire. |
