Chapter 70: It's All Up To Fate
Date: October 21, 2018 (Z-Day + 4) Location: San Diego, California
The cars stopped by entrance to the base. As expected there was a long line of people, waiting to be screened to be granted entry unto the Navy ships. Many of these people
"Move aside, we have two wounded!" One of the men shouted. This baffled one of the Navy corpsman and the Marines guarding the checkpoint. A contingent of them approached this rag tag of people armed with lots of weapons. There appeared to be two wounded, a young man in his 20s about to pass out and an older man with no
"Alright, we need you guys to turn over your weapons. We don't allow that on the ship." The Marine officer said. Slowly, the group then began unholstering and unslinging their weapons while taking off their vests and holsters before the Marines took it and placed in a crate full of surrendered weapons.
"How did these two get wounded?" The Marine officer asked.
"This one got shot in the back by some looters." The young Filipina girl said while tears fell from her face. "He needs medical attention."
"And the other one had to be amputated after he got bitten."
"WHAT?!?" The officer shouted as the Marines aimed the barrels of their M16s and M4s at the amputated man.
"Don't worry, we got the Infection on time. We cut his leg right after he got bitten."
"Sir, we don't allow Infected personnel to board the ship." A young Marine said.
"Please sir, we got the Infection on time."
After a moment's hesitation, the Marine officer agreed. "Put this one on quarantine and on armed guard 24/7. If he turns, shoot him." The other wounded young ma was carted off towards the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island after his blood was screened and found negative for the infection. As for the amputated man, the blood also turned out negative.
"We'll do everything we can to save your friend." The corpsman reassured the crying girl.
"I have never heard of amputations working before." The corpsman said. "We should give this a chance. Alright folks, line up." One by one, the ragtag group of survivors was screened and turned out negative. They were then given the pass to enter the Makin Island. ******************************* While securing the last line of checkpoint and observing the, LCpl Trevor Allen managed to see a familiar face among the crowd. "Could it be?" He thought.
"Spencer! Hey Spencer, over here!" He shouted. This caused the other Marines to look in confusion.
"Is this your friend you were talking about?" A Marine asked.
"Yes, I'm glad he made it through." Trevor replied.
From the crowd, Spencer then saw his friend.
"Holy shit dude, it's you!" Spencer said as he approached his Marine friend. Angela followed through. "Hey, it's your friend in the Marines she said." The two shared a friendly hug.
"I knew you'd make it, you tough SOB." Trevor said.
"I'm glad you're safe too, bro." Spencer. "Oh and this is Angela, a friend I made along the way. And these are some survivors I met along the way too. Two of our friends are wounded though. They're in the med-bay as we speak."
"I hope they'll be fine. Look you get on board, we'll guard this place until the order is given to haul ass."
"Stay safe buddy."
"We got a lot to talk about, dude." Trevor replied. ******************************* Date: October 21, 2018 (Z-Day +4) Location: Medbay of the USS Makin Atoll Currently docked at Naval Station San Diego
Behind the safety glass, a lot of people congregated to see their friends or loved ones get treated for non-bite wounds. Some were treated for injuries while others included having their pacemakers repaired by Navy surgeons.
There was Gillan, passed out and undergoing surgery to remove the 5.56 bullet that lodged into his right shoulder. Gabrielle could see behind the glass. She hoped her friend would make it. Despite reassurances from the corpsman and other medical enlisted personnel, she could not rest until his condition was stable. To her, he's one of the kindest and most supportive friends she has ever met. The two with a group of other survivors made it through this Hell, but now there he was, fighting for his life.
In the quarantine area lied an unconscious Jim, constantly being monitored by medical personnel and a duo of Marines with M16s, ready to put him out of his misery if he should turn into one of the Infected.
"Hey, I think you should head to the quarters and get some rest." Angela told Gabrielle as she patted her on the shoulder. "Spencer and I will watch over."
"No...He's my friend. I can't just leave him here." Gabrielle said. "I stood by him and his friend Mike as we escaped from L.A. He does not even know he's here."
"Gabrielle, I know you care deeply for him but you look like you're about to have an emotional breakdown. Get some rest, I'm sure he would not want to you see being sad about him. I'll have Jules, Mike and the others accompany you." Angela said.
"Okay, I guess you're right." Gabrielle replied as she embraced Angela.
"Get some rest, we'll call you when he wakes up." Spencer said.
Jules and Mike then accompanied Gabrielle back to the quarters. Behind the glass, Spencer and Angela holding each other, hoping their friend would make it. Angela could not help but feel sad too, knowing her father died just two days ago. She'd hate to see people go as she also knew what Gabrielle has been through. She understood that way Gabrielle feels about the possibility of losing a friend she just got to know better in the past four days.
"Please Lord, save our friends in there." Angela told to herself. ******************************* Aboard the CINC, the captain of the Makin Island received order to evacuate port. They were the last ship still docked there as they tried to get as much refugees as possible. But now the Infected were already banging the fences of the naval station. San Diego had truly fallen and whatever resistance against them was scattered and isolated.
Outside, the Marines saw wave of refugees trying to enter the ship, but there were too much. Some would not even be screened on time. How the Hell are we supposed to know if they got the virus? He thought.
"Come on, get out of there Allen!" A fellow Marine said.
Reluctantly, Trevor Allen grabbed his M4 and headed back to the ship. A few minutes later, the Makin Island sailed off the bay, leaving behind thousands of screaming survivors that tried to make a run and even swim for the ship. Many of them would die trying so, but it appeared better than being torn apart of the Infected.
Their screams would continue to haunt those who survived the outbreak for the years to come. ******************************* "All those people." The captain muttered to himself. The guilt weighed heavily on him as he just sentenced thousands to their death. The bridge was silent, no one muttered a word as the last ship left San Diego for good.
In less than 30 minutes, the Makin Island would then join the large U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, MARAD vessels, and other civilian craft off the coast of Souther California led by the aircraft carriers the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Carl Vinson. All the ships then retreated at full speed towards Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where the islands had been designated as a FEMA safe-zone since the crisis began. However only 2,000 refugees could be accepted due to the islands having not enough resources to feed a population of masses.
The others were relocated to Santa Catalina Island or up north into Washington State, western Canada, or even to Alaska and the Aleutians where the cold was expected to slow down the Infected.

I forgot what happened to Gitmo here? Is it still online or evacuated? Fun fact, we didn't write anything about Gitmo. Sound like the song, We Don't Talk About Bruno.

Troubled Waters - New Orleans (LA) Part 6: Operation Cobalt
Date: October 19, 2018; 5:12 AM (Z-Day+2) Location: Loyola Avenue (Defense Perimeter code-named Charlie) New Orleans, Louisiana
Karpov and the others watch the long and strangely calm USAF aircraft turnover over the now burn-down city of New Orleans, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium have been strike at first, hours ago and now is just reduced to ruins. At least they are in a safe location in Mandeville where thousands of civilans and law enforcement officers are taking place in order to maintain the last point of evac in southern Louisiana. This is just insane to see how normal people can behave in such conditions. Crying children and anger screams are now the last remaining part of mankind. The FEMA camp is now longer operational as too many people try to found a rescue and it seems that the situation will worsen hours after hours, of course local police and National Guard are trying to do their best but how can they stop this giant wave of the dead?
Some people are gathering around a functional radio post:
"It's now confirmed that Washington D.C area have been evacuated by the federals hours ago. No reports are coming from Baltimore where latest news reports a total destruction; at an international scale the newly emergency government in South Africa have confirmed that new safe zones have been established in northern Pretoria..."
"What they expect for dropping a nuke or two on those ugly bastards?" asked a man.
"If they had the balls to di the right thing, this shit wouldn't have happened." Another replied.
At this moment Karpov surpises himeself when he is beginning to pray for Olga and Steve.
"I hope they are safe."
He have tried to call them but he can't have them.
Maybe they just escaped the worst as their wedding ceremonial is not so far of Baton Rouge...
Maybe they had the time to take a car and escapped this shit...or maybe not...
He can't imagine what his daughter and even this stupid American may have have feels if they had been eaten alive.
The radio speaker are still speaking: "Well, we have news from California, where the USN and USMC are trying to securise San Diegeo in order to evacuate all citizens required."
Karpov thinks that at least he is not alone to fight, every man or women on this earth will fight back.
He will try to save his daughter if she was still alive.

Chapter 71: Close Enemy Date: October 22, 2018 (Z-Day +5) Location: Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan"What does he say?" asked Colonel Pat "Coolhead" Stewart, USAF, with a kind of anger mixed up with surprise. "Sir, he just said that he and his warriors will join us in order to defend this place." answered Lt. Mark Dupuis, RCAF. "I know this is pretty insane, sir." "Insane?! Are you fucking kidding me? Lieutenant, we are enduring one of the worst crisis that humanity has endured and we are helped by our worst enemy, the Taliban, this isn't insane, this is fucking unbelievable!" "Yes, but we are limited in strength right now and last unit of Afghan National Army had go AWOL last night after reports of mass infection in northern Pakistan. We can't defend this place alone, sir." "God be with us, we fight against flesh-eating monsters with those fuckers that made 9/11....shit." The USAF Colonel replied. A small international contingent held back Bagram after last repatriation flight have been shot down somewhere over Kyrgystan as Manas Airfield was not respoding. A lot of expectations about outbreak in central Asia. Even these places, considered "irrelevant" except to those millennial hippie travelers, were touched by the virus. USAF colonel Stewart was the last high ranking officer for a bunch of Americans, Canadians and Belgians and now he must collaborate with one of those "goats fuckers". "You are dissmissed Lt." Col Stewart said. "Thank you sir." The Royal Canadian Air Force personnel replied, before leaving back to his quarters as the colonel was not in his best mood. "Damned shit!" angrily yiells Colonel. Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada can't believe his own eyes. He is working with those "fucking imperialist pigs", but after all "the ways of Allah are infallible". He perfectly knows that only NATO troops can efficiently destroyed those monsters that overrun so many cities and villages in southern countryside. They all had the guns and treasure to destroy Satan's spawn while him and his ragtag group of rebels only have small arms and a few technicals. He have seen with his own eyes one of his best man be torn apart by a dozen of a villagers and maybe that when the outbreak will be suppressed, maybe that all the ground that he won, will be the asset for pushing Americans to finally negotiate an end to this decade-long conflict. There is no longer Pakistan and its support to the Taliban but there is no longer the "U.S. puppet" government in place as those cowards fled for their life. "Allah is really infallible, I hope so." He says as he comitting a blasphemy. "I hope so." Some Taliban Toyota pick-ups have been discharged not so far of the base and a first defensive line was established by NATO and Taliban in order to defend the last point of human civilization in all the southern Afghanistan.

Just like in kspence92's I Am Legend timeline, NATO troops would be forced to have a truce with the Taliban.

Chapter 72: Natural Help
Date: October 23, 2018 (Z-Day +6) Location: Aitape-Sanduan Province, Papua New Guinea"Can you imagine corpses walking under the sea? Nah you can't but I know what i saw today," said Marvin Marapae in a mix of English and Tok Pisin to ADF naval officer next to him. "This can be true, we had reports of an Indonesian ship fulled of refugees that sunk at the north of Wewak." Answered back an another officer. "What can we do? We haven't enough ammo and weapons for stopping them. If a lot of them land on the beach, they are gonna overrun us." worried a local police officer of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary[1]. "Any fishing nets?" The ADF naval officer asked. "Fishing nets, sir ?" The policeman replied with confusion. "Yes, fishing nets will be able to block them and catch them. This will an easy way for killing those fuckers." Some hours after, fishing nets have been placed all along the Aitape beach. A small contingent of ADF navy officers, local policemen, and armed volunteers had took position, night begins to fall under the tropical island. The Australians were armed with their standard issue F-88 Austeyr rifles while the local policemen had with them older M16A2 and L1A2 rifles. The armed volunteers were given shotguns, handguns, and WWII-era Japanese Type 99 bolt-action rifles and Lee Enfield bolt-action rifles that were placed in reserve armories. Some of them brought their clubs, bamboo spears, and machetes as a last resort. The large floodlights were turned on, illuminating the dark Pacific waters. "Look at this, they are coming." A local shouted. One after another, strangley deformed creatures began to wash ashore on the beach. The floodlight gave them an eerie look. They were caught into the fishing nets. A lot of them had missing limbs and large sharks bite traces. Even disturbingly some had open guts that housed several crabs living among it. "At least the sharks are happy..." The Australian officer said with a smile. "Let them come. We need to catch every single one of them, don't forgot what happened in Darwin...only one have been able to launch an outbreak." "Sir, what happened to Darwin?" asked a Papuan policeman. "I think they are still trying to extinguish the giant fire after RAAF bombings." Rooten human silhouettes are still trying to get out of nets as the locals were begging to haul them back to shore and finish them off for good. "Oh look, here comes a saltwater crocodile." A local fisherman said. The giant beast didn't hesitate to attack and cut in half an infected that was caught by the net. The water was full foam splashes which then was clouded by rotten, congealed blood that would soon be diluted by the sea water. "Hey sir, nature is going to help us all, it's great." The policeman said. "I fucking hate those crocodiles but I must recognize that they are giving us a great help." The ADF officer added. More saltwater crocodiles appeared and took down the Infected trapped on the nets, their eyes glowing as the floodlight illuminated the reptiles. The locals then filmed the scene with their smartphones. "Dinner is served, lads". Written by ukron [1] The official police force of Papua New Guinea.

Intermission #12: Zombie Go Boom, FAA Notice from Z-Day5 The Walking Dead Weapons in REAL LIFE, uploaded on August 1, 2018, Zombie Go Boom, YouTube. The channel was supposed to return to YouTube around Halloween 2018 when the Killer Pandemic began. Nonetheless, with the emergence of Infected, the hosts of the show namely Chuck Mere and Charles Fultz were able to utilize the weapons and tactics when it came to battling the Infected. A week since Z-Day, the Zombie Go Boom channel has uploaded videos of the host fighting the Infected as well as fan submissions from all over the world. 10/17/2018 Due to the ongoing pandemic affecting the United States and much of the international community, all flights across the continental United States, the states of Hawaii and Alaska, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have been grounded until further notice. All inbound flights have been redirected to Canada and Mexico. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 10/17/2018 FAA Statement on Killer Pandemic Virus cases at FAA Facilities Like much of the country, the Federal Aviation Administration is experiencing an increase in KPV cases at air traffic facilities and other offices across the nation. Many of our employees have fallen to the virus. We will never forget their service to the American people. Despite the challenges, our commitment to safety will not waver. Our air traffic system is resilient and flexible. Every air traffic control facility in the country (PDF) has a contingency plan (PDF) to keep air traffic moving safely when events impede normal operations. In some cases, this means transferring duties to adjacent facilities. Air traffic controllers, technicians and safety inspectors are highly trained professionals who play critical roles in safely and efficiently moving tens of thousands of aircraft and millions of passengers — 24 hours a day, every day. Our agency’s mission is to operate the world’s largest and most complex airspace system. But we have an equal obligation to ensure the health and safety of our employees. Each disruption has a distinct impact on the air traffic system. We are experiencing this at the handful of facilities already affected by the KPV. This is frustrating and inconvenient, but is necessary in the interest of safety. We will do our best to keep the public abreast of a rapidly changing situation. Passengers can check fly.faa.gov for real-time updates about how the air traffic system is performing. We appreciate the public’s support and patience. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 10/18/2018 Department of State advises U.S. Citizens to avoid all international travel due to the Killer Pandemic Virus. The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of the Killer Pandemic Virus. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing simulatenrous outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.

Chapter 73: Pro Mundi Beneficio (For the Benefit of the World)
October 24, 2018 (Z-Day+7) Panama City, Panama
The Panamanian Public Forces AW-139 Helicopter swooped down over the huge fleet of ships waiting their turn to pass towards the Pacific Ocean. A lot of them were USN or RN ships but a significant majority of them were in fact civilian ships transporting humanitarian help or weapons. In this time of outbreak, no one could ever doubt of the importance of Panama and its motto: "For the Benefit of the World" as long a government was still active.
Panama continued to perform its duty. Panamanain defenses have been reinforced by a lot of international troops especially U.S. troops (which had a token amount of personnel pre-outbreak), this wasn't something easy to accept for Carlos Remon and his men. Even if Noriega was out of service for a long time (and dead for a year now), no one really liked the idea of seeing Americans making a come back in Panama. Nationalism had been strong for the past decades. After all no one could possibly cross the Darièn gap, even infected coming straight from Colombia or Venezuela. Of course there was Costa Rica but as far as he knew, the Nicaragua break-up is not yet due to outbreak. At least Panama could sleep with peace as long he and his men guarded the Canal.
From thousands of ships waiting to pass through the famous canal, one of them had an interesting background: the ARC Independiente, a Colombian navy ship, having escaped from Carthegena. Now it contributed to Panama's defense.
"How ironic." Carlos thought. Colombian and Americans working together for protecting Panama. This is like how some flesh-eating virus have been able to turn in a bad joke all human history...
But today's history was going to take a new path, thanks to Panama Canal.

Chapter 74: All Shots Are Allowed
Z-Day (+?) [DATE CLASSIFIED] Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South KoreaThe following audio file is classified as Top Secret (following U.S. Government Executive Order 13526) "I ain't going to take that risks to my men and my country, Mr. Smith." said Colonel Park Ha Chul (ROKAF)[1]. "Colonel, you seems not to understand something basic. It's a vital national security issue, we can't let them win." "Win what? We aren't at war with North Korea as I know but with a reanimation syndrom Necro-virus...North can't even handle hurricanes and droughts. I seriously doubt they can feed their soldeirs, let alone they can't even feed their own population. Hell, I doubt the even have the fuel for their tanks and planes for such a magnitude. I can't understand how they would be able to successfully invade a gumiho[2]-infested South Korea. More over, Kim did say he would want to cooperate with us to rid the peninsula of this infection. If we go to war with North Korea, it would make the Singapore Summit last June all for nothing." "As far as we know, they have thousands of bunkers and underground facilties, able to manage to survive without contact with outside for years. You must understand that if we are overrun, they won't and I guess that no southerners want to live under communist utopia, right?" (The colonel marks a break in order to smoke) "And how do you want to do this?" "We have some specialized C-130J, ready to drop packages over DMZ. " "And if the plane is going to be compromized?" (Silence. The CIA agent doesn't answer back.) "I guess that this a 'All shots are allowed' situation, right?" "Right, but this is for South Korea and the rest of the free world. Don't forget it, colonel." "I am pretty sure that I will never forget that, Mr. Smith." (Transcript ends) Colonel Park Ha Chul had been "killed" during the fall of Kunsan Air Base as it was overrun by the Infected. "Operation Majestic" was supposed to have been a success. *********************** Author's Notes: - Written by ukron[1] Republic of Korea Air Force [2] Monsters in Korean folklore

On this I agree with Colonel Park as it seems a bloody stupid idea. Any survivors in deep shelters aren't going to be able to conquer a still standing S Korea. Possibly one that's been overrun by zombies but that would mean no real S Korea is left anyway.

This last chapter can be seen from different pov, some would argue it's just some conspiracy theories batshit, other a true document. At this point i let the reader have his own idea regarding a potential American "counter-attack" against North Korea in case of a global zombie pandemic.

Chapter 75: Beldur (Fear in Basque)
October 23, 2018 (Z-Day+6) Pyrénées Mountains Basque Country, Spain
It is often said that old basque mythology is quite fascinating but it's pretty interesting to notice that Basque had always keep their traditions, even after a long time of Christian rule over Spain and France. Not so such much people had interest in this fascinating group and I guess that the zombie apocalypse won't help, even if the defense of Basque Country have been acknowledged as a heroic act. I had heard stories mixing up basque mythology and Zombie apocalypse some months ago when i had to interwiew some people.
One of the most strange story is related to the Gaueko myth. For those that do not know, Gaueko is a kind of demon, a spirit of night, that often be associated with kidnapping of women and children that show off as brave in the night, boasting of not fearing the darkness.
An old Basque told me about an encounter during a night between the Infected and armed militiamen. They had fortify a small village and had obtained weapons from an old ETA[1] arms cache.
"This what like The Night of Living Dead." Some survivors said as they were besieged by a lot of Infected.
But this particular tale happened.
The old Basque told me that they had been hearing a terrible scream. At the first they thought that it was a kid caught by one of this dammed zombie. When they approached the area of the screams, something they should never forget. A cow-like monster was holding a young girl in his hands and it whispered to the Basque something like:
"The night for Gaueko (The one of the night)", and he passed out in the darkness of the night.
"Oh, I guess that it was certainly a zombie attack and that they try to pretend it was a monster attack."
"I am not so sure. I bet that you are right but what if...what if itwas Gaueko? After all, no ones though that zombies were real before Z-Day."
"Oh please professor, don't say that you believe in such fairy tales."
[The claim was later dismissed as a hyper-exaggeration of the events that occurred. Many survivors are still experiencing PTSD to this day.]
[1] ETA, an acronym for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna ("Basque Homeland and Liberty" or "Basque Country and Freedom"), was an armed leftist Basque nationalist and separatist organization in the Basque Country (in northern Spain and southwestern France). The group was founded in 1959 and later evolved from a group promoting traditional Basque culture to a paramilitary group engaged in a violent campaign of bombing, assassinations and kidnappings in the Southern Basque Country and throughout Spanish territory. Its goal was gaining independence for the Basque Country. ETA was the main group within the Basque National Liberation Movement and was the most important Basque participant in the Basque conflict. They were designated a terrorist organization by Spain, France, the UK, the U.S., Canada, and the European Union. On May 2, 2018 - just five months before the pandemic - ETA made public a letter dated to April 16, 2018 according to which it had "completely dissolved all its structures and ended its political initiative" - Interview of Pr. José Miguel Labat regarding Basque Country in Hersch Book about the Zombie Apocalypse
