Things to note.

1. HMS Prince of Wales is headed for drydock. She snapped a port shaft on deployment. Stuff like this happens, so this should not be unexpected.
2. USS Lenoh Sutcliffe was added to the USN order of battle. She is named for the first USN nurse. She trained and stood up the Nurses corps in time for WWI.
3. GDEB *General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded money to lay down the Flight 4 Virginia Class lead boat. More automation, more missiles and guaranteed nation killing if the "enemy" does not understand what we are building.
4. AUKUS; Atute or Virginia? It depends, but an Astute is still where the smart money bets. Note that the British after they screwed up the Astute had to import Americans to train the VIckers work force to EB standards as well as REDESIGN the RN sub. 29 November 1944.

Enright proved THIS TIME to have nerves of steel.

The Mark 14 of 1944 was a lot different from the Mark 14 of 1942; the torpedoes ripped through the Shinano's torpedo defense as if it was not even there. It took a long time to die, but the Americans had good intel on how bad the Yamato design actually was. It was probably doomed in spite of the heroic Japanese damage control party efforts.

Captain Abe chose to go down with the ship. He took 1,500 crew with him. He was an idiot.

As for Enright, he found some redemption after his earlier yellow streak aboard USS Dace, which the October before had covered herself with glory under the skipper who relieved Enright.

She now joined Darter in an action which brought both submarines the Navy Unit Commendation. On 23 October, they contacted the Japanese Center Force approaching Palawan Passage for the attack on the Leyte landings. Since the location of this Japanese force had been unknown for several days, the contact report reported by Dace and Darter was significant. The two submarines closed the task force, and Darter attacked first, sinking Atago and damaging Takao. Dace followed with a torpedo attack that sank Maya, then went deep to avoid counterattacking destroyers. Continuing to track their target, hoping for a chance to finish off Takao, the two submarines worked through the Palawan Passage. Darter ran aground. With the area full of searching enemy ships, Dace took Darter's men off, then fired torpedoes at her to destroy her. Before diving to avoid a patrolling Japanese aircraft, which had bombed Darter. Dace sailed on for Fremantle, Western Australia, arriving on 6 November.

The UKG is alleged to send the ASTUTE in a two units package to Australia.

Now how credible is this rumor? Not very.

I have my reasons to doubt the rumor, if the AUKUS committee has people on it of any sense.

a. The British have only 5 of these boats in service.
b. The Astute (Claimed by the presenter, a former acoustics technician (sonar rate) to be better than a Virginia. M.), is NOT DESIGNED for the Australian environment. See MAPs.





Brief explanation; The Astutes were and are designed as benign environment North Atlantic boats. The Australians operate in hotter, shallower waters with much lousier sound conduit paths, where the enemy has relative air superiority (Airborne ASW forces use French technology.) and the advantages of numbers (Lots of frigates) and geography (Ocean choke points controlled.). The submarine, the Australians operate, has to be designed for their environment and operational situation. They are up against some rather rough opposition, unlike the complacent British.

The AUKUS submarine will need excellent any ocean environment sonars, a land attack capability and great underwater maneuverability, TOUGH HULLS, as well as a GOOD powerplant, NONE of these desired characteristics of which has been a hallmark of past British submarines.

Taken in order:

a. The Mark 6 magnetic influence detonator was fairly well understood. It was supposed to get a "tuner" to adjust sensitivity and a firing table to correspond to regional vagaries in the Earth's magnetic field as the cruiser, USS Indianapolis had been sent out to MAP the earth's magnetic field and figure out how it hehaved in 1932-1933 so that such firing tables and a rheostat circuit could be retrofitted.

The problem was that Bu-Ord Actual, Harold Stark, refused to follow up on Ralph W. Christie's recommendations as it would blow out his budget and make him look bad. Christie, reassigned after the Indianapolis tests, never was told the work was not done, since he was not allowed access again to a "classified program" until 1943 when he was finally told the Mark 6 exploder was expletive deleted by the idiots at Goat Island. He put remedial measures into effect, but it was a war on and King was pushing his own people to fix the torpedo problem with a monkey copy of the German electric G7e.

b. Deep diving was a case of copy paste the hydrostatic valve position on the Mark 10 into the Mark 14 case for case and simply assume it worked. It was NEVER tested, except in battle. The solution was to test the actual torpedo in multiple shots through a cargo net and then recalibrate the markings on the existent depth setter set screw as to the holes found in the net.

c. The same was true for the contact PISTOL, but here we have two wrong statements historians repeat. It was not the pin which bent. IT WAS THE EXPLETIVE DELETED GUIDE RAILS which when bent JAMMED THE PIN in mid strike against the shotgun shell which was supposed to set off the gunpowder charge that would detonate the main charge. It was a kinetic striker positioned 90 degrees to the vector line of impact and not 90 degrees to impact point, too. To fix this problem with what was in inventory, the solutions were two:

a. grease the guide rails so the striker traveled before crush forces bent the guide rails.
b. lighten the striker so it traveled faster before the crush forces bent the guide rails.

This was determined by dropping a Mark 6 with its Mark 5 exploder onto a steel plate from a vertical drop of 20 meters or about 66 feet. ALL of these fixes were carried out by Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, which made the DON back at Washington look very bad.

Consequences were that a LOT of admirals were fired (Stark being one of those idiots.), and a lot of factory workers (Goat Island) wound up in the Army.

e. Bu-Ord had an idiot named George Blandy when all this manure came rolling downhill, who was the monkey in the barrel when ADM King started beating on it with a hammer. He took 19 months to figure out a decades' worth of screw ups and cover-ups. To his credit, while he was also covering up his own culpability in this disaster, he started about 18 different torpedo programs which ranged from the King ordered duplication of the German torpedo to fixing the Mark 13 air dropped torpedo and at least a half dozen new acoustic seeker anti-ship torpedoes, two different oxygen torpedoes, and pattern runners and wake homers.

How successful was he? He was fired. Three of his torpedo programs bore fruit postwar. One formed the mainstay of US antisubmarine torpedoes for 2 decades as the Mark 37. The other two, a NAVOL torpedo (hydrogen peroxide fueled fish) and an electric lasted a decade or so before OTTO fuel was invented.

In the meantime, the University of Washington developed a new exploder (Mark 9) slated to replace the terrible Mark 5 / 6 and the US Congress passed a law in 1944 (Truman) making it a court martial offense for a program officer to certify a weapon as battle worthy without comprehensive live fire testing under simulated war conditions.

So... expensive, takes forever to get it fielded, but it will go bang as advertised.
