Some do. Especially if their got a vested interest in doing so like large payments from their employers. However the redeeming feature about science is that its difficult if not impossible to sustain such lies. It can take some time if the liars have a lot of influence but it will happen. The tobacco companies couldn't hide the facts forever and neither will the big sugar companies or the global warming deniers. How many each kill in the meantime however is a serious issue and in the latter case it could well be in the billions.

Well there are precedents in the tobacco industry and in the US it led to a lasting settlement. Of course the damage done by the fossil fuel industry, especially in the recent decades is markedly greater and its complicated by the fact that they are still required in some areas because no reliable alternatives have yet been developed, in part because of their efforts to block such activities.
